Match

Verulam Angling has a very active match scene, with at least one match taking place every week of the year. We fish a mixture of home and away venues, offering a varied and engaging range of competitive experiences. A full list of this year’s venues and match dates can be found here. There are no age limits, and all members are welcome to take part regardless of experience or ability. New faces are especially welcome. 

Oakwood Angling Verulam Annual Championship
Fourteen Sunday matches held fortnightly between June and December. This is the club’s flagship competition, with the overall league winner crowned Club Champion. Although the Championship League consists of fourteen matches, only your best ten results count, so missing a match or two won’t put you out of contention. Points are earned based on overall position on the day. Cash payouts are awarded at every match, as well as for the overall league winners. Matches are held across a mix of home and away venues.

Summary of the Oakwood Angling and Verulam Angling Championship 2026

Silvers League
Six Sunday matches held between February and April, focused exclusively on silvers. Only your best four results count. Points are awarded based on section results rather than overall placings. Cash payouts are awarded at every match as well as for the overall league winners. Matches are held on a combination of home and away waters.

Evening League
Six evening matches held on consecutive Thursdays during the height of summer. As with the Silvers League, only the best four scores count and points are earned from section performance. Cash payouts are available at every match and for the overall league winners. These matches are held exclusively on home waters.

Tackle Shack Tuesday Matches
Matches are held every Tuesday throughout the year, fishing a mixture of home and away venues. Like the Thursday matches, these are non-league events and are open to all members, subject to peg availability.

Thursday Matches
A friendly match takes place on Riverside on the first Thursday of each month from March to December, and on Frogmore on the third Thursday of every month throughout the year. These matches are not part of any league and can be joined at short notice by any member.

Match Information

Match pools vary slightly according to the competition and the venue but are kept inexpensive, straightforward, and most importantly are designed to ensure brown envelopes are well distributed among the participants.

Results are always published in full after each match—often with photos—on our Facebook match page, and are also more formally here. This means participants and all club members always have access to weights, finishing positions, and points totals where applicable.

To ensure the smooth running of each match, all participants must book on in advance with the relevant organiser.

Match Pools Cost
Club Championship. £25 for away venues and £15 for home venues

Silvers League. £10 initial buy in to the league and then £20 per match for away venues and £11 per match for home venues

Evening League. £12 per match, all matches on home waters. £1 from every peg is set aside for league winners

Thursday matches. £11 all in

Tuesday matches £20 per match for away venues and £15 for home venues.
