Marford Stick Float Clinic 1st October 2024
On a day that started dry and ended in stair rods of rain, 20 members joined four tutors – two guests and two knowledgeable club members at Marford Farm.
After hot drinks and breakfast rolls, most went on a tour of the Long Walk section – covering the swims and sharing tactics to catch in the various sections after the fantastic work the club has completed over the last year.
Our usual “star guest” Keith Arthur (from Sky Sports and Talk Radio amongst other roles) was joined by CEO of Cadence tackle, James Robins also a regular river match angler and club member Paul Andermahr.
The three shared their set ups (all very different) and explained how and why they chose them. Paul uses a centre pin whilst Keith and James used fixed spool reels.
Many fish were caught and many members caught their first Lee barbell on a float. Many tips were shared by the tutors and by Alan and Malcolm who were talking through baits and rigs to use at any time at either Marford or Leasey Bridge.
Rob Maidment ably assisted by Derek and Chris Greening kept us all fed and watered and the gazebo provided respite from the torrential rain at the end.
The feedback has been brilliant and the events team look forward to next year as well as putting on other events over the next 18 months or so. Look out for details on the website and especially through E-news.
“I just wanted to drop you a short note to thank you and all the team for setting up and executing yesterday’s stick float clinic under very difficult conditions. From the catering set up to the 4 tutorials and the assistance from the bailiffs, I can only say that it was an exceptional day. I learnt so much plus the bonus of landing an 8lb barbel with a centre pin reel! I had never used one before.

“I would just like to thank you and your team for an excellent day at the Marford Farm Float Clinic today. Everything else was excellent from the catering, through to the tuition. Their inclusive attitude along with their sense of humour under some rather trying weather and water conditions was admirable and it was a pleasure to be part of the day.

Evening events team, just a quick note to say how enjoyable the day was. Even though it rained heavily it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits, every day is a day at school and it was amazing to see and learn and put into practice the different trotting methods used by the three coaches, and to actually catch my first barbel on the stick and pin, I’m now a convert and looking forward to getting up there with my own gear to do the same again.
The food was good as well and hit the mark perfectly, so well done to the caterers and all involved to make this a day to remember.
