Smallford
Location
Smallford is a mature gravel pit located between St Albans and Hatfield, just off the A414 at Colney Heath. It offers easy access from the A1 and M1, with good local transport links. The fishery runs alongside the Alban Way, a popular public footpath connecting St Albans and Hatfield.
Overview
Acquired by Verulam Angling Club in the late 1950s, Smallford has evolved into one of the club’s flagship fisheries. Following major environmental changes during the 1970s, the club invested significant time and effort restoring and developing the venue into the impressive fishery enjoyed by members today.
Our dedicated management team continues to improve the site year after year, ensuring Smallford remains a well-maintained and enjoyable venue for all anglers.
The lake offers a wide variety of features, including:
- Depths ranging from shallow margins to around 29ft in Deep Bay.
- Tree-lined banks and extensive reed beds that provide excellent fish-holding areas.
- A central island and numerous natural features, including gravel bars, gullies, plateaus and silty areas.
- Diverse swims that offer a rewarding challenge for anglers of all experience levels.
