Sea Angling trip to Minehead – March 12^th and 13^th 2024

8 Anglers went out on two charter boats from Minehead in Somerset. The first day had a windy and wet forecast and whilst the wind did blow it stayed almost dry.

On day one 6 species were caught – thornback rays, spotted rays, small eyed rays, blond rays and conger eels (and many dogfish!). They were caught with both downtide and uptide methods and on a mixture of squid and fish (mackerel and pilchards) baits.

Some anglers were sea fishing for the first time, some refreshing a hobby they had several decades ago and some were seasoned sea fishermen.

Day two was dry but if anything, even windier and with the big tides, fishing was challenging. Everyone persevered though and by the end of the day we had added three more species – starry smoothound , smoothound and three bearded rockling. The best fish of the trip was a magnificent 16lb smoothound caught by Andy King.

The skippers were brilliant, helping with methods and suggested rigs, moving to take advantage of the different stages of the tide and keeping us all in teas and coffees!
