Marford Farm

Location

Marford Farm is a stunning stretch of the River Lea, nestled beneath the historic village of Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, just five miles north of St Albans. Despite its peaceful rural setting, it’s easily reached from the A1 and M1, and is only around 25 miles from central London.

Overview

One of Verulam Angling Club’s most popular river fisheries, Marford Farm offers outstanding fishing for both pleasure and specimen anglers.

The Short Walk is renowned for its excellent stocks of Barbel into double figures, hard-fighting Chub, quality Dace and Roach approaching 3lb. Large Perch and the occasional double-figure Carp also feature.

Fishing is from purpose-built pegged swims, created during the club’s river enhancement works. Reed-lined banks, steady flows and plenty of natural features make this a consistently productive stretch. Swims 1-13 form the first beat, while swims 14-19 on the second beat are generally shallower but equally worthwhile.

Across the road, the Long Walk provides a more natural, secluded experience. With sweeping bends, overhanging trees, deep pools and shallow glides, it’s perfect for anglers who enjoy exploring the river. Barbel, Roach, large Chub and Carp can all be found throughout this beautiful stretch.

Marford responds well to a wide range of tactics, including float fishing, trotting, feeder fishing and legering. The Long Walk particularly rewards anglers prepared to keep moving in search of fish.

Please note that this fishery has special regulations, including fishing from designated pegged swims only and specific permitted fishing times.
