Weil’s Disease (Leptospirosis)
Weil’s Disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection spread through water contaminated by rat urine. It can require hospital treatment, but early diagnosis makes it highly treatable.
Help protect yourself
- Cover all cuts and grazes with waterproof plasters.
- Clean and disinfect any wounds immediately.
- Wash your hands before eating or handling food.
- Never place fishing line, hooks or bait in your mouth.
- Avoid touching dead animals, particularly rats.
- Do not leave bait or food on the bank, as it attracts rodents.
Know the symptoms
Early symptoms can resemble flu and may appear between 3 and 19 days after exposure.
If you develop persistent flu-like symptoms after fishing, tell your doctor that you may have been exposed to Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease).
Fishing Near Overhead Power Lines
Always look out and look up before setting up your tackle.
Carbon fibre rods and poles conduct electricity and can be deadly near overhead power lines. Electricity can arc through the air, meaning your rod does not need to touch a cable to cause serious injury or death.
Stay safe
- Check for overhead power lines before you start fishing.
- Remember that power lines can be difficult to see, especially against trees or hedges.
- Keep at least two rod lengths away from overhead power lines.
- For matches and organised events, pegs should be positioned at least 30 metres from overhead power lines.
- Never allow rods, poles or fishing line to come close to electrical cables.
If you’re unsure whether a location is safe, choose another swim or seek advice before fishing.
