Duch's different view
I have been thinking about my Carp fishing for some time now, I have been having Arguments with myself about all different aspects of my sport, Although I am a relative newbie to this class of fishing and do not class myself as an expert at all, I have spoken to quite a few people and listened to what they have said, some of those people have big fish to their name, Some dont, I have read some of the angling comics and watched some of the films and one thing that keeps occuring is that everyone has their own meathods and views and you can be guaranteed a lengthy discussion chatting about anything Carp related.
There was an article I read a while ago that made me open my eyes a lot wider than I used to, I accredit what I now think to James Harrison.
On to why the hookbait is left and all the free offerings are eaten.
We as carp anglers are led to believe that this is because carp can see or feel the rig, the line, the hook or the lead. we are also aware that some carp are super intelligent. Maybe this isn't the case. Carp are thousands of years old with thousands of years feeding experience behind them. This has led to their mouths being highly evolved filters. They are adept at finding food and feeding.
Think about how a carp feeds. It sucks in an item and blows out anything it feels is not an edible item, sorting food from non food within it's mouth. When it does this it also sucks in debris from the bottom that is defiantly not edible like small stones, mud and weed. They seem to sort the contents of a mouthful and spit out what is not edible and digest what is.
How many times have you heard a single beep then a while later, another and then you get a run? Sometimes we even think it's a bream. Sometimes we think there is a shoal of carp feeding on a spot and this may not be the case. It may be a single lone carp feeding and filtering the edible items from the non edible ones. It may pick up your hookbait and when it finds that it cannot seperate the two, it simply spits out the whole lot. The carp may have several tries at this whilst feeding on your baited spot and I am not sure the carp has done anything super intelligent here. Just what it does naturally from day to day, seperating food from non food.
I have watched some DVDs where you see a carp feeding and missing the hookbait by millimetres, then swimming off and returning. Picking the hookbait up and getting caught. Surely, if the carps intelligence was so great the it would have seen the lead or the hook. Maybe this is why some carp are caught on artificial baits. They are sifting the bottom and spitting out what is not edible or maybe just being inquisitive and because they don't posess arms, hands or fingers, they use their mouths just like a dog. If carp like artificial baits so muchthen why don't WE as carp anglers bait up with them? Have dead carp been found to have a belly of artificial bait? How many different types of bait are available nowadays? All of them are catching fish. The different flavours of the baits may help the fish to find the food. Feeding on gravel may be nicer for the fish than feeding in silt because there are less non food items to filter.
There have been a lot of interesting points of view posted on this forum and this is just an opinion that i have come to.
