The VAC Events Committee regularly creates opportunities for members to improve their skills, try out new methods demonstrated by club and guest experts - typically arranged on our own waters, and organises trips to other notable venues where we try to block book the fishing exclusively.

In October 2017 we had a notable month in which plans long in the making were materialised and a record number of five Events took place which typified the diverse nature of these opportunities.

We began with an excellent pole & match fishing workshop at Riverside on Sunday 1st. VAC Match champion Allan Bayman gave a very professional presentation, leading a coaching session with the perfect mix of enthusiasm and patience. Despite the wind and rain, everybody expected turned up and it was clear that much was learned. Those who stayed on for the match caught reasonably well despite the conditions.

On Saturday 14th we had the Stick Float Clinic at Marford Farm. This of course has always been a very popular event and it was nice to see that all members in attendance were there for the first time. Our guest Keith Arthur was joined by 3 other demonstrators from VAC, Dave Currell, Paul Andermahr and Andy Ferrier each showing their expertise with a different stick float approach. The weather was kind and despite the low water all caught fish for the audience, including some much bigger specimens than we've seen at this event in the past. This event takes a lot of organising so much appreciation to all involved in making this such a great success.

On Saturday 21st we had our trip to River Itchen fishery with our usual mix of coarse and fly anglers not equally balanced this year with fewer fly anglers coming forward, reasons unknown. On the day this was just as well as conditions were very poor with Storm Brian still raging, with even the coarse anglers finding it hard going. That said, those who suffered for their sport had some good fish, topped by the monster barbel for Terry Lathwell.

The next day on Sunday 22nd we had our first autumn Pike Match at Moor Mill, organised by Paul Chilton. Winner was Stephen Hill with just one fish of 6lb beating the runner up with a single fish of 5.5lb. Not a big turn out but one member who had gone to the Itchen the day before came along to observe and learn so as to attend the next Pike Match, which was planned for November at Smallford.

To finish off the month on Saturday 28th we ran a trip to Rutland Water for predator fishing. Four boats were booked and 8 members ventured up for what regrettably turned out to be a bit of a disaster. On arrival the venue advised that part of the water was closed off due to high winds and even in the section they opened little shelter could be found from the horrendous gusts. Some left early with seasickness after an utter soaking from the waves, but those who gritted it out took small zander and pike to 12lb. A note of thanks to Bradley Wiffen who supported Paul Chilton in leading this event.

By no means a typical month for the Events section, but October 2017 will be long remembered, hopefully for the most part for good reasons!
