Carp Match 2013

The Annual VAC Carp Matches are in full swing!

At the time of writing, the VAC Carp Pair’s competition – The Matt Mills Memorial Trophy – is in full swing. This is the flagship competition for the club’s carping fraternity, and is always very keenly contested.

Matches are fished over a 44 hour period from Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime, and the pair banking the biggest total weight of carp is declared the winner. More importantly, they secure the bragging rights for the year for both themselves and their “home” fishery. It’s fair to say that the banter between the Moor Mill and the Smallford anglers can be fierce, but with the Moor Mill lads walking away with the trophy with almost monotonous regularity in recent years, the Smallford boys are under pressure this year!

The first heat was held at Kempston in May. This was a new departure for us, as we normally only host these matches at Moor Mill and Smallford. There was some trepidation about how a fishery like Kempston would perform under such angling pressure, but as it turned out our concerns were groundless. The place fished extremely well, and most of the anglers put numbers of fish on the bank.

With the top three pairs from each heat progressing to the Grand Final, competition was fierce. The lake produced fish throughout the weekend, and in some numbers. Ultimately, a good winning weight was achieved and the back-up weights were also notable. Much to the carper’s amusement, the club’s matchmen had held a club match on the venue several weeks previously, and not one of them had managed to get a bite, let alone bank a fish. Therefore, once the buzzers started sounding and the fish began to feed, there was a sense of great relief amongst the carp boys.

Progressing to the Grand Final from the Kempston heat are;

Bradley Wiffen & Lewis Wiffen - 127.11lbs

Andy Killinger & Rob Shore - 65.03lbs

Nik Taylor-Pugh & Jim Hutton - 46.15lbs

Congratulations to all three pairs, and we will see you in August for the showdown!

Special mention should be made of Barry Killinger & Graham Kenchington. Whilst they will be the first to admit that they are not “carp anglers” as such, they are certainly doing their damndest to prove the point! I think this is either the fifth or sixth year that Barry & Graham have set forth upon their quest for the trophy, and they have yet to bank a single fish. True to form, they again blanked at the Kempston heat. If we ever give a prize for consistency, you have it nailed, guys!

The second heat of this competition is due to be fished at Moor Mill from 21-23 June, and the third heat is to be held at Smallford from 19-21 July. At the time of writing, there are still a couple of places left in the Smallford heat, so if you fancy a crack please let me know as soon as possible.

The Grand Final will be held as usual over the Bank Holiday weekend, 23-25August. We will be having the usual barbeque and Giant Prize Raffle on the Saturday afternoon, when all are welcome to come along and show their support. All donations of prizes are gratefully received, and please join us for a beer and a burger. Above all else, we use this event as a fund-raiser for our hosen charity, the Grove House Hospice in St Albans, so anything you can do to support will be in aid of a very worthwhile cause.

We hope to see you there!
