Bury Hill Tench Days 12th & 13th April 2014

The VAC Specialist Committee are delighted to announce that we will again be running the Tench Days at Bury Hill Fisheries again for 2010. These days have proven extremely popular in the past, and were over-subscribed, so make sure you get in early this time around.

We have booked all the punts on the lake for both the Saturday and the Sunday. We will therefore have exclusive access to “The Jungle” – a large bay on Bury Hill’s main lake which is renowned for it’s tench fishing. There are no bankside swims whatsoever in this bay, so the only access is by boat. Imagine large beds of lilies, rushes and thick bankside vegetation. A tench-fisher’s dream. And Bury Hill continually produces large tench – we had several personal bests amongst the anglers that have been on previous trips.

We will be fishing from punts for the entire day, and these hold two anglers comfortably, and three at a bit of a squeeze. You may find that you will want a small chair, as these fit in the punts easily, and sitting on the wooden benches of the punt itself can be uncomfortable after a few hours. Please also remember to bring an unhooking mate – it’s a rule at Bury Hill that all anglers carry them.

As far as tactics go, it’s as simple as you like. Standard waggler fishing at very short range with maggot, corn or pellet will certainly do the trick. Get tight to the bankside cover, and you should have a good day. We generally land some good tench, but there are also plenty of decent bream and some big carp taken, so be prepared to step up your tackle a bit.

Bury Hill are again opening their doors early for us, so it’s a 06:30am start. There’s a cracking café on site, so many choose to have a fry-up before they start, whilst others head straight for the punts. It’s your choice either way. There’s also a tackle shop on site in case you forget any of those vital bits and pieces.

The cost of the trip works out at £18.00 per head, to include boat hire and your day ticket. Unfortunately, this year we will not be accepting bookings without advance payment, due to a couple of “non-payers” in previous years. If you would like to come along, please send details of your name and preferred date, along with your cheque for £18.00 per person, which should be made payable to Verulam Angling Club (St Albans) Limited, to;

Alternatively, you can grab any of the Specialist Committee guys on the bank and give them your booking and payment.

As you can imagine, there will be lots of fiddling about to try to fit everyone in on their chosen date. We will do our very best to accommodate everyone, but this may not be possible. Can you please therefore also include a contact number and email address if you have one, so that we can juggle people around if necessary. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. If we are massively over-subscribed, we will try to book a second weekend to accommodate.

Please don’t miss this one – it’s a really great day out, and a chance to do something a bit different by fishing from a punt. If you want to check out last year’s event, the full details are on the Specialist Committee’s website;

Hope to see you there.
