Verulam Angling Club Barbel Day

Held at Felmersham 11 Sept 2010

Well the weather was kind to us, which was great, as approximately 50 VAC members and some non-members took the opportunity to attend the annual Barbel day at our Great Ouse fishery, Felmersham.

The day started at around midday with a talk from our very own Keith Speer. Keith spoke for around half an hour, sharing the finer points of stick float fishing for Barbel. The talk contained pictures of a selection of Keith's captures over the last 45 years. Needless to say, there were a couple of dodgy photos which proved very entertaining. FYI - Keith is holding a "Stick Float Clinic" at our Marford farm fishery on the 25th September. This time you will be able to watch Keith demonstrating the techniques he uses.

Keith was followed by Chris Bell of the EA and Karen Twine of Hull University. Chris gave an overview of the field work being carried out by the EA which is directly funded by your license fee.

Karen gave a very detailed talk on the fish tagging survey she has been undertaking on the Ouse Barbel migration throughout the river system. Her talk really opened our eyes to exactly how far the fish seem to move and migrate. They really aren't always where you think they are? A little tip is try where other anglers say there are no fish and also the slacker water?

Karen was presented with a cheque for £250 on behalf of you, the VAC members, by Jon Hussey (VAC SC Chairman) and Keith Speer (VAC & SC Hero) in order to assist her in the day to day costs in conducting the survey.

Overall it was a very informative day with lots of tips, ideas and stories being swapped and told.

Look out for more news on how Karen works with VAC in the future.

Every year we at Verulam Angling Club hold a Barbel Fishing day at our fishery at Felmersham.

The organised part of the day starts at 11am when refreshments will be served; there will then be a talk on Float Fishing for Barbel followed by a Talk on Barbel populations and movement in the river Great Ouse by Karen Twine and Chris Bell

Karen is carrying out this study over a period of several years; she has found some interesting and previously un-known facts about Barbel and their movements in The Ouse above Bedford.
This is a un-miss able opportunity to find out about the private lives of our favourite quarry, expect to learn a great deal from Karen.

There will be a BBQ (not free but very reasonably priced) where there will be the opportunity to sit and talk fishing.
There will also be a bait company in attendance, you will be able to purchase bait and get the answers to all your bait questions.

Non VAC members that attend the day will be able to fish our venues at Felmersham to Sharnbrook, Radwell and Carlton Road on this day only until midnight.

This all day event is open to all and attendance / fishing is free.

We will require some idea about numbers so that we can plan effectively, if you wish to fish you will have to register with the organisers between 11am and 2.00pm.

Please contact me by e-mail keith.speer@btopenworld.com and I will send a map with directions by return.
