Commentary
by Nick Darke:
With a foggy start and heavy showers predicted, the day didn’t look too
promising. On arrival we could all see that this lake was absolutely full of
fish. They were just everywhere! A big weight was definitely on the cards.
I got off to a great start with a fish on within seconds. I was using
pellets for feed and paste on the hook. After the first few hours I continued
to catch steadily. It was also good to see fish being caught all around
the lake. It meant nobody was going to run away with it. However I knew I was
catching more consistently than anyone else at this stage so I knew I was in
with a chance. With a few hours to go I switched to my margin line up against
some reeds in hope for some bigger fish. Almost instantly a decent fish was on.
I then continued to catch bigger fish one after another from the margin right
up until the final whistle.
No doubt the highlight of the day was young Connor launching himself
into the lake to swim after his pole which was pulled out of his hands by
decent fish. With everyone laughing and cheering Connor on he thankfully
managed to chase down his pole and get it back to the bank. Amazingly the fish
was still on and Connor landed the fish not long after!
As the final whistle blew I knew I had done pretty well but so did a lot
of other people too. Weighing in one by one Josh had a massive 97lb 6oz from
peg 3 but he reckoned that wouldn’t be enough to win it. I certainly didn’t
think I came anywhere near that. Some more big weights came out with Graham
getting 87lb 8oz plus Brian and Stan each getting 70lb+. I thought I had around
70lb too but it wasn’t until I pulled my nets in I realised I had much
more. I weighted in at 104lb 2oz which was just enough to take first place. It
was only one or two fish which made the difference. It just goes to show
how close it was. As you would expect, I was very happy with the win in only my
second ever match.
Overall it was a great days fishing all round the lake. Lots of fish
were caught with more than half of us getting 50lb+ bags. We also were lucky
the weather stayed dry apart from one or two brief showers. Despite a lack of
sunshine it was still very hot and humid but it certainly didn’t affect the
fishing!
