that carp are weighed in at Smallford. But when Josh Blavins drew 23
(Marlborough Point) he knew what to do and carried a bag of Chum Mixer
with him. Sure enough, with temps nudging 25c, fish were on the surface and an early take
resulted in a lost monster. He then rushed around to Nick Darke on
37 (Big Point) and borrowed some tougher tackle.
Back at his peg he managed to hook and land a 10lb common plus 8 bream to 4lb, all on the floating biscuits, for 38.14. This was 2oz short of Graham Holt on peg 3 who had bream on the feeder at 40yds for 39lb. But star on the day, when 23 fished (as many as we can fit on Smallford) was Roger Smith who drew peg 4. This peg holds the venue match record and Roger knew that if the bream were on the pole line he would do well. Using a feeder on the pole is something Roger has practiced and, along with conventional pole tactics and a combination of mini-boilie and corn hook baits, Roger was almost 20lb clear with 59.03. Good to see pegs other than 37 take top spot for a change. Nick, who won at Frogmore the previous Thursday, thought he was in with a chance and run to his peg (again). A steady start kept spirits high but an almost fishless last two hours resulted in a section win only. Those in Deep Bay where few bream venture struggled and whilst silver fish can be caught, pike keep them on the move and Paul Bangs was the best of the worst with a section win from peg 11 of 8lb of roach and rudd. A tough day for some but still the best average weight (around 13lb) per angler for many years. Sorry about the picture.
