Commentary by Stan : Kev Hawes almost run to peg 37, his favourite and one of the most consistent feeder pegs on this challenging water. On a bright and breezy day Kev was happy to punch his feeder fished worm out to the island with his favourite swingtip setup. But Smallford was having one of her moody days and it was about an hour before he had his first bream. Meanwhile, on peg 6, last years winner Graham Holt was looking for a repeat performance and soon had two bream in the net.

But things went from slow to slower and Graham couldn’t add to his weight whereas next door on peg 8, on his first visit to the fishery, Josh Blavins had picked up a mixture of skimmers and proper bream before a switch to 14m pole added some precious ounces with small roach, rudd and perch. I was on Marlborough Point (peg 23) and struggling. Feeder to the island produced one skimmer and the long pole line had produced just a pair of decent silvers and some perch. I was on the same peg as last year and picked up a tench (like last year) close in on the pole. The tench went 5.08 but I couldn’t add to it and his last hour or so was biteless. Over on Little Point (32) young Matt had also hooked a tench close in but lost it as it went where Matt’s pole couldn’t follow. Matt won the previous match at Frogmore and If he had landed that tench he would have won again as moments later he hooked a second tench which this time he landed. A nice 5.04 male fish.

Typical: After the weigh-in, I chucked a bait out to the island whilst packing  up and it was quickly taken by a 5lb bream.
