As is usual. a reduced turn-out on this last match of the series. Dave McGrath was leading the league but 2nd place Nick Darke could still win if he ends up in the top 3 and Dave blows out. The night was warm but rain during the day was still about and we were treated with showers at the start and finish. Typically, Nick Darke drew peg 8 - where Dave won with 33lb a few weeks back. But there was to be no repeat performance and Nick was to put a pathetic 8oz on the scales. Dave didn't do much better from 39 with just 1.06 but his son, young Connor (pictured right at Frogmore), stomped all the grown-ups with a fine display of feeder fishing from peg 42. I was there last time and it's hard work getting out to the boards where a shallow plateau attracts the bream when the weather is warm. Connor's 15.08 was not a high score for Smallford but, on a difficult night, and just a few days after the 48 hour carp match, it was a clear win. The next three were very close with less than 1lb between them. In 2nd place was Paul bangs with 11.04; three bream in the first hour plus some bits, next was Kev Hawes, fresh (?) back from Cyprus and on plum draw 37. The swingtip kid's magic was a little lacking with just 10.09 as he did drop back a 1lb skimmer. And on 32 was yours truly with three bream and some silvers for 10.08. The last two bream were caught in the last five minutes...clearly too long spent chasing silvers. Overall a good evening league with strong turnouts and plenty of winners and, for some, plenty of fish. See you next year |
