Match : Annual Officers Match
Commentary by Stan: A reasonable turnout of 18 including such stalwarts as Rodney Lee and Steve Axworthy and good representation from the Riverside and Smallford bailiff teams. Shame many others officers couldn’t join us. As is tradition, the day kicked off with one of Brian’s mega brekkies followed by a punctual draw. As is normal for me I took what was left in the bag and pulled out flyer 53 !! With Mark Jones having practised on it the day before (and he had drawn 52) I didn’t expect to have an easy run of things. Plus Dan was on 22 and Neil on 2 – both potential winners and, given how the fish had been moving lately, I knew nothing was guaranteed. With 52 and 53 the carp live tight to the overhang and if you hesitate they will quickly reach sanctuary and ping off your hook. But, as I’ve found, if you fish a very tight and powerful elastic you bounce the hook out. On the day I must have lost 8 this way plus one that was too quick. As it turned out the carp were not there in numbers and after a few small commons it all went quite. To my left Mark was struggling and over on 2 Neil had started to target roach…umm, it was not looking to be a big weight day. As the mid point passed I opted to abandon chasing the carp for a while and fish close in for bream. To my delight, tactics copied from ‘The Foxman’ worked a treat and I had a run of bream between and 2 & 3lb. Resting the near line by going over to 14m for carp worked and 6mm expander picked up another run of small carp. A final look on the near line for the last 30mins resulted in a couple more bream. Over on 30 Brian had been catching a few including hooking & loosing carp off the top and Ash, on 9, hooked and lost half a dozen carp on maggot fished shallow. Elsewhere, all seemed quite. At the weigh-in results were patchy and Ken had the biggest fish, a mirror of 9.08 from peg 46 (by the gate) and a couple of other lumps were weighed in. Compared to some results reported during the week (Sue Shaw had 30 carp off the top!!) results were disappointing but, of course, I was delighted with my win. The day ended with a super BBQ – thanks to Mark, Rog and Brian, with burgers and beers all round. Magic ! |
