MATCH RESULT

Date :        14th June 2009

Venue :     Riverside Road

Match :     Rodney Lee Trophy, Championship #1

Commentary by Stan : A great turnout of 25 to support Rodney Lee and the Kidney Foundation ensured that around £140 was raised. Thanks to all who brought raffle prizes, much appreciated. The weather was wonderful as well. OK, not so good for fishing but a beautiful day. A cracking breakfast (thanks Brian) followed by a punctual draw saw three hopefuls heading off to gold, silver and bronze pegs. As the first two are full at £200 the match committee have agreed to make them easier to win so coming 1st, 2nd or 3rd on the GP will take the pot or 1st or 2nd on the SP etc.

Brian had his peg drawn for him...38, the one he'd fished twice already this season. Not a 'form' peg, in fact I can't remember it winning before, but Brian was happy enough and by halfway had 5 carp up to 4.08 in the net for almost 9lb. He then added almost 6lb of roach and rudd caught in close on maggot for a convincing win. Not a massive weight but consistent with previous years and overall it fished better that a few weeks back.

In fact it was all very close and Richard Wheatland needed just an extra pound or so to win £200. I should have won (of course) from snag peg 52. Like a fool I started on 8lb line (0.20) to 22 elastic and was soon seen off by a carp with quicker reactions than me. Eventually I got myself sorted out with my TIGHT 24 orange bungee elastic and took my own advice to pull like @$%* sideways rather than backwards. Result was no more lost carp...until bites dried up and a desperate swap to a lighter caster rig (still on Red Drennan) caught me off guard as the carp pushed the score to 4-4. Two minutes from time and a 1lb carp on pellet gave me 2nd place just over Jay who had his six small carp plus perch and tench early on from peg 2.

Man of the match was young Matt who drew his own fav peg 53 and apart from one quick look for a carp at 13m (he found it and lost it) stuck with what he knows best....catching the bream in close. Light rigs and dotted floats helped him to a deserved 10lb and 4th place.

Big fish were hooked and lost all around but it was a struggle for bites for some and John on 22 managed to loose 10 carp so will be at the shops stocking up on heavier gear. I think I'll try 14 elastic, doubled up next.
