Match †††† : Championship #1

Match Write-up: by Allan Bayman

We had a good turn out, 26 in total, for our annual Riverside Road start to the championship. Our last warm up match had produced some good sport for most but reports had suggested it was fishing poorly in comparison. However a decent draw would likely give you some action through the day. A damp gloomy morning could not lessen the look of the venue which looked in fine condition.

At the draw some good luck saw a number of the noted pegs pulled out and Steve Burfoot was on 22, Dave Parrot on 20, Mark Jones on 5, Roger Smith on 2, Phil rule on 25, Alan Thomas on 28, Martin Boddy on 31 and Coin Rennison on 45. There were only a couple of pegs in I did not want. 18, 19 and 32 with 32 being in my opinion the worst on the lake and thatís what I pulled out.

After the whistle Paul Bangs started catching and Dan was soon into his first of many carp. Colin Rennsion had a skimmer first put in and was getting some silvers. Brian Lakin was also getting some roach action along with silvers guru Paul Bangs. It was looking rather slow and the persistent rain added to the slightly downbeat start.

A the match progress a few carp were hooked. I lost a very good fish that broke me on 6lb bottom and Steve Burtfoot and Phil Rule were loosing some carp too.

Colin Rennsion was getting into this stride with roach, crucians and some carp. Over on pegs 1 and 2, Kev Laird and Roger Smith were having a good battle.

At around the midpoint it looked like Dan Patrick was going to be miles ahead. On peg 16 Alan Gardener was getting some sport from carp and bream. I was not catching crucians to my margin and finally got a few fish in the net after a slow start.

The last hour saw me hook a very big carp 10lb plus on a shallow roach rig and after some insane runs all around the lake the fish came off and as suspected a scale confirmed it was foul hooked. Kev Hawes also hooked on a roach rig but got his 4lb fish in. Dan continued to turn up the pace adding a burst of turbo pasty carp and right on last knockings Barrie Cowley got a good carp in.

It looked like Dan had won by some margin but it was not clear who the other framers were. Alan Gardener set the early lead with 15lb 12oz from peg 16, a good result. Just 2 ounces behind was Brian Lakin on peg 54. In the peg 12 and 2 battle Kev Laird pipped Roger Smith by 2oz 13lb 11 to 13lb 9oz. The pegs in the low 20s didnít deliver on the day. Phil rule on 25 had 18lb 2oz loosing as much in the snags. Paul Bangs spilt the two with a nice bag of 17lb 11oz and taking 2nd place was Colin Rennsion with a lovely net of crucians, roach and carp for 25lb 10oz. Both the first 2 places had a good number of fish on worm.

Couple of polite requests. If you book on a match and then cannot attend you must notify me. Some matches are likely to be full so if you drop out let one of our colleagues take your please plus it makes pegging a bit trick. Please donít use mallets as they really can mess up your peg and others nearby.

Next up is Tylers Common, Horseshoe Lake on the 26th of June.
