Venue : Riverside

Match : Championship #1 - Rodney Lee Trophy

Commentary by Allan Bayman:

A good turn out for this annual charity match with raised £102 for the Listen Kidney Foundation.   Chatting to people over one of the now famous Riverside breakfasts (thanks Brian and Kev) before the match it sounded like it had not been fishing well.

At the draw AlanT took the rated peg 5, peg 28 was taken by John McCarthy. I was very happy to finally draw peg 22 in a match. It won the last match and Iíve practiced here before and done very well.  The fair start to the day didnít last long and the rain started with drizzle before the match got going.

On the whistle there were plenty of umbrellas up. 15 minutes into the match I was full of confidence with one chub and two carp in the net on catmeat. I then proceeded to make a hash of things and lose carp after carp through hook pulls, fish making the snags and being broken a few times. Elsewhere round the lake the silvers were not showing in big numbers unlike the raindrops. The open water was producing the odd bream. Neil Anderson was struggling on peg 12 by the pads. He shipped out his £2,000 Preston pole to 11m, struck a bite and snapped the end section. Unable to telescope the section due to a previous repair he resigned himself to fishing at 9m and, first put-in at this range hooked a 4lb bream. Three other large bream followed before the line died and he had to resort to hunting for a few extra silvers.

With around an hour to go Connor came round and it sounded like it was likely to be pretty close as by the sound of it nobody had really hit the carp. I then lost another this time a proper lump estimated 12lb right at the net, not my day. Iíd also heard Roger Smith had a lump about 9lb

The whistle came and walking round after the match it sounded like the disappointing form people had spoken about during the match had carried though in the match with people struggling even for silvers on maggot.

At the weigh in the weights were not huge with low numbers of carp and silvers showing. Colin on peg 50 had a few nice crucians and had added a carp in the last hour for 7lb 14oz which sounded like it was going to be a good weight on a hard day. Many of the weights were grouped together with anglers spilt by mere ounces. On the island Paul Bangs silvers and one bream went a good 7lb 4oz, a good weight on a hard day. Lots of nets of a few silvers and the odd open water skimmer. There was a nice perch of 1lb 1oz weighed in. Rob Napper managed 5lb 13oz with a couple of carp.

Roger Smithís rumored 9lb carp was about half the size suggested but still gave him 5lb 3oz which would prove to be enough for 8th out of 33 anglers.  Next weight at the sharp end was Neil, his net went 14lb 4oz. My first three puts-ins rewarded me with 5lb 11oz. The moody peg 28 was now sounding like it could be in the running and John had done well on a tough day to get four carp from four bites. It was going to be close but at the weigh- in he was just 1lb 5oz short of Neilís winning weight giving John second with 12lb 15oz. Pete Fell on 31 managed to get amongst the open water silvers with small bream, roach and plucky crucians, splitting Colin and Paul Bangs for 4th with 7lb 4oz.

Overall it was a hard day with not much reward for most anglerís efforts. No doubt the weather change really did not help. Letís hope the evening match on Thursday see the form return.
