| Commentary by Stan:
Turnout was a fantastic 28 - many new faces and some fishing their first
ever match. In number terms about 9 match 'regulars' and the rest, well
received worm drowners down for a bit of fun. After a windy ol' week it was a perfect fishing day and started in the best possible way with some breakfast munchies at the Riverside 'Bistro'. The punctual draw found many of the regulars on favored pegs with Mark Jones on flyer 22, Andy K on flyer 2, Matt Young on his favourite 53 and Kev Hawes back for the second time in a row on flyer 25. I got what was left in the bag..36...not one we usually add in (for good reason). Some got off to a good start with Paul Bangs landing a foul-hooked 6lb mirror within the first 15 minutes after a long battle on light roach tackle. He wasn't so lucky with the next one and only added 6oz's which shows what a hard day it was as Paul is often the man to beat at RR and peg 12 by the lilies is as popular as they come. Elsewhere a few fish were coming out, mostly small rudd. Opposite me Nick Cerri, fishing his first ever match, had two bites and two 5lb carp for 3rd place, proving that patience is a virtue. On peg 24, Alan Gardner also fished for carp with a buzzer and boilies. A big double slipped the hook at the net costing him a likely 2nd place. At the top end, Andy K managed Ok without a pole to put together nearly 4lb of silvers plus 3 carp for a 12.08 2nd place. Down the bottom end, far bank feeder tactics was the unusual approach that worked for life member Mark Jones who put four good quality carp on the scales for 23-01 and a clear win. My day was spent 50:50 chasing roach on the waggler and carp down the margins. The 3-14 I weighed in included a 2lb carp on the caster which shows how difficult it was to catch even small roach and rudd when they are playing hard to get. |

I hope we can run this match again next year. Perhaps earlier in the season when the fishing is (hopefully) easier. Other suggestions for fun matches are invited. Examples include; random pairs, elected pairs, silver fish (no carp) only, carrier bag (all tackle and bait bar rods must be carried in a standard supermarket carrier bag), natural baits only etc.
