MATCH RESULT

 DATE:           1st  June 2008

VENUE:         Riverside Road

TROPHY:       SpringWarm Up #3

Commentary:

Riverside must be female (sorry Pat) because how else can it be explained regarding it’s weird mood today??

Conditions were perfect, mild, no wind, no rain and overcast. Perhaps it was the large turnout of 29 that put the fish off? Perhaps it was water from underground springs following the recent heavy rain, perhaps it was a knee-jerk against the excellent fishing since 12th May? Who knows? But what is known is that the large bags of carp, tench, roach and bream that have featured recently were questioned by those visiting Riverside for the first time this year as minutes turned to hours with barely a bite.

Stan’s drawbag luck was working today as he took one of the two remaining pegs and found himself on peg 2 – an animal peg that has won its share of matches. Dave McGrath was the one to watch on 53 – a peg that has produced more carp than any other in the last two weeks and Ken Sharp was on peg 22. This was the peg that won the last match here. But that was the Christmas match when Mark Jones found around 9lb of small carp.

So hard was the fishing that one could be mistaken and think it was Christmas again. By half time several anglers were walking, Stan, Ken and Roger on peg 19 had all lost ‘proper’ carp in the very snags that make those pegs attractive and elsewhere just a few roach and bream to 3lb had been landed. Feel sorry for Steve McCarthy who had a 2lb bream first put-in and nothing else for the next 4 hours and 59 minutes.

Terry Searles left his boilies and buzzers at home and tried his luck with match fishing, using the pole on peg 24 to find a steady run of small brown fish (carp, tench etc.) and was looking to hold his early lead to the end. Stan swapped to roach tactics and promptly lost two carp before going back to carp gear (8lb line, 20 elastic, 8 hook) to pull out of a 5lb’er plus put a small common and a big brown goldfish in the net. Roger gave up fishing the roots and, in open water foul-hooked and landed a 4lb common and Dave Mcgrath landed the second of only two small carp from his ‘flyer’.

Into the final hour and down on 22 things woke up for Ken as he landed the first of a run of five small carp to weigh 10-04 to win the match (remember that Ken was 2nd last month at Smallford)  pushing Terry into 2nd place with 8-06. But Terry elected to only pay into the section pool so lost out on a £40 payout (but did get £15 for the section). Surprise surprise, on peg 45 Malcolm Jefferies landed two good carp from the pads pool for 8-05 with Roger Smith taking 3rd place with just 6-09.

Stan’s 5-02 was enough for a section as was Ray Pettiford on flyer 52 who had a bream and a blade for 3.02. Six anglers didn’t bother to weigh in (or blanked) so hopefully things will be better in two weeks for the first Championship match of the season when we kick off with one of Brian’s fine breakfasts and hopefully some better fishing.

Total weight of 76lb for 29 anglers - arghhh
