Commentary by Stan: The canal at Marsworth is a very popular place. Popular with boaters (about 20 passed us during the day plus a canoe), popular with walkers, popular with cyclists (not good as the towpaths are very narrow) and popular with carp. In fact the carp love the place so much that they refuse to come out….about 25 were hooked and lost!

However, one of the two landed (aside from the 1lb ‘babies’) was to Dave Cragg who was on the Silver Peg. At the beginning of the season we agreed to expand the rules slightly to make the pots ‘easier’ to win. Dave needed to win or come second on Silver to pick up the pot of £180. And, lucky for him, his skimmers plus a 4lb carp were good for 7-15 and second place on the day. He was just 9oz behind Paul Bangs on end peg 2 where Paul wisely kept away from the far bank trees (and carp) and focussed on small roach, skimmers and perch on maggot over groundbait and squatt, putting 8.08 on the scales for a close win. Dad Brian was to his right on golden peg 3 – two lost carp proved expensive on the day. Neil also felt the cost of losing carp when his efforts to stop a carp reaching root cover saw his no.4 section (on his £2,000 pole) snap clean in half taking the top kit down stream. Fortunately the carp shed the hook (how do they do that?) and Neil was able to retrieve his shattered carbon.

Taking 3rd place was Roger who was pegged at the upstream end amongst the boats. He also lost numerous lumps but did land three small carp around 1lb each plus some silvers.

For my part, I was on the same peg as last year when I landed a 14lb carp. So I spent much of the match fishing soooper heavy gear for a carp. After no action a few skimmers ensured I would weigh in. In a search for a better skimmer I tried a pellet on my light rig…..and lost a carp – doh! To my left Josh fished at 16m for carp but could not stop the three lumps that took his worm bait. Much the same for Nick, Steve and others who gambled on getting a win from one big carp…and loosing out on silvers and a chance for some more points.
