VENUE: Leighton Buzzard - Town South - GUC
TROPHY: Championship 17
Commentary: A decent turn out of 17 set out to do battle with the GUC monsters. Roger (where's me wallet) Smith volunteered to do the pegging so he was sent well downstream away from the Sunday walkers where the far bank is a jungle of trees, brambles and bushes.
The coffee coloured water didn't look right for punch and squatt so most went on the long pole towards the far bank looking for 'lumps'. It was far from certain who was going to win with some many fishy looking pegs and decent weather conditions......
Myself and Colin Winter were pegged at opposite ends of about the biggest 'jungle' but we both started down the track at 5m catching 'eyeballs'. Colin began getting a few net fish so with almost an hour gone I was about to try the long line when a tiny bite resulted in a 2-8 bream. Result! Another 30 minutes on this line brought a few much smaller skimmers then Colin had the first of some very lumpy perch on his long line at 13m.
I went over and had a few weighty bream/roach hybrids on caster then a couple of nice perch on my chop worm line at 14.5m. Looking up and down I couldn't see anyone doing better so stuck on this line for a couple of hours but the pace had slowed pretty quickly. To my frustration Colin continued to pick up net fish on the long line then I pulled out of a large bream.
With 90 minutes left Colin and I seemed to be neck and neck. In desperation I tried the 5m line again and found it 'solid' with big perch that were giving tiny bites on maggot and caster. A 1lb hybrid also came along plus a few small roach.
Colin was now struggling. A quick look on the long line again found for me 3 or 4 small fish so the last 15 minutes were back down the track where I added a few more net fish before, reluctantly, having to call time.
The scales gave me 13-09, well past Colin's 7-01 which was good for second overall and just pip'd his Knock-Out final rival, Cliff Myers, who was on 6-15-8. And Cliff pulled out of a bream on the whistle - doh!
Dan took 4th on 5-11 and Roger moved ten points closer to dent Ash's lead in the champs. All to play for at Marsworth on March 4th. I can't win but Rog only needs to get 3rd or better and Ash to be 7th or worse to win. All subject to the final scrutiny of Brian Lakin.
