MATCH RESULT

 DATE:           15th  February 2009

VENUE:        GUC - Hunton Bridge

TROPHY:      Championship #14 (rescheduled date)

Commentary: A quick 'pitch' inspection early in the week revealed a fast and very murky Grand Union. The result of melting snow and heavy weekend rain. Clearly the fishing was going to be hard but not as hard as things turned out. By Sunday the water was swift and clear. A nice green tinge and with no overnight frost most were hopeful of a bite or two. In fact, Josh confessed to a sneaky practice on Thursday with 10 chub to 5lb - wow!

The peg to be on was no.4 and feeder fan Ray Pettiford found the lucky number. Chucking his feeder the short distance to the far bank trees his arms where not folded for long when he foul-hooked a 2-08 chub. Around him not a sniff of a bite and after a couple of hours several were walking the banks. Around mid-day a slight rattle on Ray's tip converted to chub no.2

Meanwhile, it turns out that Clive Bailey had found some tightly shoaled roach and was catching on bread. As everyone else started to loose the will to live Clive was into fish after fish after fish. However, it still seemed a tall order to beat Ray's 5lb +.

The final whistle couldn't come soon enough although to everyone's surprise, Tom Heighton found one roach for 3rd place and worth £18 in pools. Ray's two chub went 5-03 but all credit to Clive who kept the fish coming, for his stonking 10-05. Tom's single fish went 5.08oz. The remaining twelve anglers recording dry nets, for some, their third blank in as many matches. For what it's worth, I drew peg 1 which was the Silver Peg on the day so a win would have got me an extra £200. Half the match was spent link-ledgering a lobworm hoping for that monster chub or carp but it wasn't to be. To my left on peg 2 was Paul Bangs. Despite trying every trick in the book his failure to catch & get good points means that I've retained the Championship title for 08/09. Well done me.

As no section wins were awarded those who paid in will be credited for the next pegged-down match or refunded their £2.
