VERULAM ANGLING CLUB

MATCH RESULT

 DATE:           14th September 2008

VENUE:         Entire Farm, Arrans Lake.

TROPHY:        Championship 7

Commentary: Yet another bag-up session at this amazing water. And once again we were lucky with the weather. Despite a little bit of confusion at the draw (the bank side peg numbers had moved) we were all soon settled in our pegs ready for the 9.30 start.

Within minutes of the whistle elastic could be seen streaming out as good sized carp threw themselves onto our hooks. A number tried pellet waggler or long pole but most successful seemed to be paste in close. The exception was Ash on the dam end who fished corn all day tight to the bank which seemed to pick out the bigger fish with about six fish over 8lb landed (to 12-14) plus he was broken several times.

At the mid-point weigh-in Joshua was leading from flyer peg 9 ((it’s a point on the farm bank that intercepts the patrolling carp), I was second with 83lb and Nick was in 3rd with 80lb. Just before we resumed I said to Nick how things can turn around in the second half. I was cursed by my own words as my swim was dead – just two fish in the next hour whereas Nick to my right hit the ground running with about 15 including a 12lb’er. Elsewhere it seemed that people were catching more as the fish moved into the shallower water.

Josh went on to land 153lb in the second 3hr session (first half was 2 ˝ hours) and Paul Bangs had a similar amount, 48 carp -“24 in each net” - he proudly announced at the final weigh-in. Nick was unstoppable with fish right up to the whistle, about 124lb in the second half whereas my 57lb left me crashing to 8th place. Ash kept the fish coming on the corn adding 104lb to his morning weight as did Bob Scott who last year won with 270lb.

Over on the farm bank Kev Hawes battled an unseen monster for 20 mins which went 15 for cash & nearby Brian added 100lb to his morning weight to grab fourth place. So it ended with 1st and 2nd going to the boys in the Rav 4 again (reversing the order from Tylers) and a first and well deserved VAC win for Joshua.

Stats on the day:

2,650lb of fish

13 ton-ups (two double tons)

115lb average

412 curses for lost fish

50kg of pellets and paste (Josh used 6 bags)

At least six match personal bests

1 broken pole (Neil)
