Commentary by Stan: It was, as Winnie the pooh might say, a blustery day. For those pegged on the dam end, the wind was mostly shielded by high trees. Not that this made Kev Laird any happy when he drew peg 19. This is the first peg by the car park and the word was that it was not very productive. Paul Bangs had similar views about peg 22, just around the corner to Kev's right.

Both fished similar tactics, 11m pole, expander over pellet feed. The big difference was that Kev caught consistently for the five hours whereas Paul had several long dry spells.

But my plans were different. Expecting the carp fishing to be patchy I gambled on an all-out roach attack. Several light rigs were set up and bait was caster, hemp and maggots. Once I sussed that the biggest fish were just inches below the surface I kept them coming for most of the match, the biggest going about 10oz.

Nick was a few pegs to Kev's left and had 19 carp on pole and pellet, just pipping Neil who had about ten fish in the first hour but then struggled for odd fish for the remaining four. For the rest, things were patchy and even the sight of a pair of Spitfires and a pair of Hurricanes flying over didn't raise spirits. Still. it was a nice mild day and soon, once the winter arrives, a fish, any fish, will be a result.
