VENUE:         Chestnut Pool, Langford

TROPHY:        Championship # 7

Commentary:

A new water for us. Chestnut pool is more or less rectangular with two large islands down the middle so open matches, to keep things even, are float only.

However, consensus was for us to allow feeder fishing excluding the corner pegs. Not that that stopped Kev Marslin who put on a fine performance on peg 7 where the wind was blowing into. Three carp for 44lb plus other smaller samples, all on the pole tight to the reeds, gave him just one ounce short of Ash’s weight, which also included carp to 14lb (the one he dropped back…but was still hooked so he landed it again)

The strong sidewind was Dan’s excuse for casting into Ash’s peg. Because, or despite, this, Dan seemed to be catching carp constantly for the five hours. With an average size of 5lb you only need 20 fish for the ton. So Dan must have had 19 for his 96lb.

From peg 4 on the leeward end of the island I could see Dan bagging and thought I was well out of the running. With about a dozen carp including fish to 8lb I was pleased with my 71lb…but the four fish that ripped off around the island will haunt me. Too quick for me to unclip they cracked off 8lb hooklengths like cotton.

Weights then dropped sharply with Jay loosing fish having only 5lb line and Brian having to fish sideways to reach the island. Andy K’s weight was interesting, almost all big skimmers caught on a waggler off the end of his keepnet. Each one would launch itself like a Polaris missile. If only Andy could have been quick with the landing net he would have landed them quicker – in mid airJ
