Commentary by Stan:

Carlton Road.....it looked beautiful, gin clear water, reedmace, streamer weed, cabbages etc. on a beautiful English Summer day. Kigfishers were zipping back and forth and the sheep were busying themselves in the meadow behind. Loverly

That's the highlights over....there was something missing....fish. Difficult enough to get to the water on almost all the pegs - very overgrown and any sensible fish over 1oz was going to stay well away from anglers and other threats. With only 11 turning up (fortunate really as there was no room for more) we elected to have a walk-off. After a false start when Cliff Myles turned up late we eventually got away.

By the 9.30 whistle I was still looking for a swim and after 30 mins with weedcutters I managed to cut a gap and used a 7m whip to pluck out loads of chub to about 3/4oz and bleak to 1/2oz. I had one chub that was genuinely just 1 inch long. Numerous plans B to F were tried, a great chance to use my Normark Titan and Abu closed-face etc. without a nibble in return. In the end even catching a 1/4oz bleak was hard work.

Winner on the day was Paul who fished to plan with worm over chopped worm to weigh in 5-09; one tench and 8oz of small perch. Some might remember that Paul caught a tench here two years ago. Same fish perhaps?

Roger stretched his legs on the day...first he walked it to check out the pegs. Then he opted to walk to the far end peg - complete with fully laden barrow and enough tackle for two. Then he walked back to his car for something then, back and forth for the weigh-in. In between all that walking Rog plucked out some proper fish; roach, perch and dace to at least 3oz. Fishing the pole to a clear spot at the back of a fallen tree was the successful method.

For what it's worth Cliff was the only other person to break the pound barrier with 50 or so micro fish. Somehow I don't think we'll rush back there again at this time of the year.
