This was the match
that I was most looking forward to in the calendar. I was sure the club record
would go and was confident of a good result as long as I didn’t get drawn in one
area. The first few swims apart from peg 1 are not an area I favour and have not
done well in previous matches. At the draw Matt Young was on the dam bank on peg
24 with Nick Dark 2 pegs away. The dam end is a little deeper than some parts of
the lake. The hot pegs are around peg 9 where a point pushes out into the lake
and reeds and the odd tree act as a haven for the carp.
Josh was on peg 6, Alan Sprake 7, Connor, 8, Kev Hawes 9, Neil 10, Stan
11. These were the swims most likely to throw up the big weights. I drew peg 2
and was gutted, but as always was going to give it 100%. As big weights were
expected we had a half time weight in after 2.5 hours and a 30 mins break for
weighing in and then a 3 hour session. Fish over 6lb to be weighed and 10 fish
per net. The club also was thoughtful enough to supply extra nets to ensure fish
were spread out and anglers all hand ample nets to keep the carp safe. It was a nice sunny
day anyway so I decided to leave the umbrella in the car and make the most of
the autumn sunshine. Everyone seemed to set up quickly ready for the off almost
chomping at the bit to get cracking. At the whistle I dropped some bait in a few
spots and went in over the top and waited for the float to bury… and waited….
and waited. Mark Jones to my left looked equally perplexed Elsewhere the fish
were being a bit more responsive and a few fish were now coming in around the
lake and on a variety of baits. Matt Young was catching on paste, Josh on
pellet. Nick Dark was also reported to be catching well. In low numbers were
quiet apart from Charlie Palmer on peg 1 who was starting to get a few carp. As
the match went on I could see a flurry of activity around the small tree that
marked the area around the point peg 7/8. Josh was netting fish frequently and I
could see Connor shipping in and out and Stan’s landing net being called into
action. Despite regular drip feeding and dumping bait in on different lines I could not get the fish to settle and whilst they were feeding I could not get bites apart from rudd which were becoming a nuisance. A switch to meat landed a couple of decent fish following 2 on the tip but then nothing, this was starting to get embarrassing. Mark next to me was also finding it tough. After a vastly frustrating 2.5 hours the whistle went and it was clear a number of people were doing well. Nick, Matt, Colin, Josh, Stan and Connor in particular looked to be at the sharp end of the figure but with plenty of others catching OK a big finish was expected. Mark and I were having our own private match with us both weighing between 16 and 17lb each ! Yes you read right. I was going to make the most of the half time break and sort some ideas out in my head to get things going At the whistle to start the second half I decided my abysmal first half could not continue and changed tactics totally dumping a kilo of corn onto one of my margin lines in one go and then fishing long in the open water firing small pinches of pellets every few seconds. I was constantly banging handfuls of corn into my left hand margin. The long line got me 7 carp in 7 put ins when I noticed the corn fed margin colouring up…. Big time ! |

I kept feeding this
margin line and the fish seemed to settle so over I went whilst feeing my other
margin line. So now I was finally catching at a proper rate but I could see
landing nets in use round much of the lake and poles bending and elastic
stretching. This was going to be a mad second half. I managed a couple of chunks
on meat down the edge from my other margin to around 11lb but mainly small fish
but with them coming on a very regular basis I was now happy with my catch rate.
Charlie to my left on peg 1 had been catching steadily in both halves but now
Mark Jones was picking up the odd carp from down the edge too. Just as the pace was
building and building to the point of if going crazy the heavens opened soaking
me as I’d left the umbrella in the car..doh !!! After a short down poor which
didn’t seem to slow the fish down the whistle went to end a frantic second half. Considering how mad
the second half had been and the club record for 5 and a half hours being 264lb
I was sure this would be broken… and by some margin. With lots of good
weights around the lake the first record breaker was Connor McGrath in the
fancied peg 8 with a superb 267lb 4oz. Connor had his 15 seconds of fame until
Josh weighed in his many nets to record a stonking 312lb 6oz from peg 6.
Both Stan and Colin got within 1 or 2 fish of the double ton, Stan
including a lump of 13lb, biggest I believe on the day although Josh lost one at
the net he claims was 20lb when he couldn't get it to fit his landing net. I had
a night and day second half with 144lb in my nets and I felt I had redeemed
myself to a minor degree after my pathetic first half result. However it was my
travelling companion Matt Young who had set the standard with an awesome 318lb
8oz for a new personal best and third VAC record in a day and the top weight.
However Got Baits sponsored angler Nick Darke was in another league recording a
mind boggling 410lb 4oz to demolish
the clubs records and record the clubs first quad ton weight !! Overall whilst the
weights were superb it didn’t fish quite as well as it could have done due to
low water and a noticeably colder night than previously. However with a venue as
prolific as this we were assured some incredibly arm aching sport. Anglers all
caught on a huge range of baits including pellet, corn, paste and meat all
bringing in the carp. 27 anglers fished and recorded 18 100lb plus weights, 10
weights over 150lb !!, two 300lb weights, a 400lb weight and four match
records in one day ! Hands up who wants to do this again at a similar time of
year ! Average weight was around 135lb !!! Mental !
