Commentary: Wow!! What a great match fished by Graham. He’s
a quite sort of chap but when he’s on fish he gets results which say it all.

Drawn
on 8, on the ‘beach’ Graham took advantage of the fact that 23 was left in
the bag and punched a method feeder with maggot hook bait about 70yds tight
to the island. A steady run of skimmers and slabs to 5-12 was the result with
a few smaller fish thrown in. To his left, Malcolm fished a feeder to a
gravel bar some 40yds to pick up similar fish to Graham, just not so many.
Ken Neville (Smallford bailiff) should have walked it from peg 37 but having
only corn for hook bait limited his fish numbers and was beaten into 4th
by Colin who was in the deeps on 39. A slider float found a variety of
quality fish for Colin including a 5-12 tench. Junior angler James Tammaro was on peg 4 (which holds the venue record of 84lb) and simply tossed a feeder 10yds out to the gravels for a run of skimmers to 2lb plus the odd roach giving him a creditable 6th just behind Dan who fished a feeder on peg 24. In deep
bay, Paul on 14, Roger (16) and I (13) had our own little match, isolated from
those slimy bream all we could go for was roach, perch and perhaps a bonus
tench. Both Paul and I got one, albeit very small. My tench was barely 1lb.
As usual, pike would unsettle the silvers and Paul hooked four plus also two
unseen lumps that may have been proper tench. Poor Roger on the golden peg
couldn’t buy a bite for long periods but I found some bonus roach fishing 2ft
deep in 22ft of water at 11m using a squatt rig.
This boosted my weight to a section winning 9-12 and an enjoyable days match fishing. Perhaps we should make Smallford
matches ‘float only’
