Commentary: Where was everybody (again)? OK, so it was the hottest day of the year, the bream and carp were spawning and it was the decider for the Premiership. But only 9 was disappointing again.
With conditions against us the catches were actually quite good with quality 3lb bream and 1lb+ skimmers coming out from a number of areas.
Stan was on Marlborough Point (23) and the island margins were just a seething orgy of spawning carp. An hour on the feeder brought one bream and a skimmer so, plan B, 7m pole in 5ft of water, was tried. This brought instant success in the form of a run of skimmers to maggot and 4mm pellet. Plan C, the right hand margin added a bonus 4lb tench and a few bits. As usual, pike would spook the shoals and it became impossible to keep the fish coming (although the carp certainly were over by the island). Last fish for Stan was a 3.08 bream hooked under the chin, a vital piece of luck as, on peg 3 Ken Sharp had been catching steadily on the feeder using corn and worm to pick up 24lb of various sized bream.
Good to see a new face in the form of
John Lapinsky who picked up bream at 7m on the pole
off the beach at peg 8 plus landed a 10lb pike which also took a fancy to
maggot (pike don’t count).
