Commentary: I thought I'd do well on peg 1 near the house. During the Winter the roach shoal up in this area. But, of course, it's still very mild due to global warming but the gale force winds were perhaps worse than the typical frosts for this time of year. Most of us spent the 5 hours simply hanging onto our poles. Getting a bait in the water was a bonus. At least the heavy rain held off but that was the only consolation for me as the fish were mostly at the other end. The previous week I had 15lb and struggled to avoid gudgeon. This week I never had one!
Sheltered from the worst of the weather just past the bridge was Phil Rule, long pole with double red maggot resulted in three nice chub including the granddaddy of all Marsworth chub, a whopping 6.3.8 monster. Along with net perch and roach Phil put over 19lb on the scales for an easy win. Roger Smith was on the far end peg, again with tree cover on the far bank which produced a run of quality fish on maggot and worm for a worthy second place.
The next three places were contested by the Verulam canal aces. No easy fishing for lumps, these guys were in their element bagging eyeballs on squatt and pinkie. Cliff Myers had the edge in sheer numbers of fish. I didn't spot anything over 4oz when he weighed in. Paul and Tim had similar bags of small fish
A good sign for the future, many small carp (2oz) were reported. Obviously 2005 was a good spawning year.
