Commentary by Stan: 

Where was everybody? The weather was perfect although admittedly it had been cold during the week and the fishing had been pretty good for the time of year.

 

Only 10 turned up and, despite the small number, the Frogmore fish knew it was a match and shut up shop as usual. Roger was in the peg he practised from the previous week (28) and was leading most of the match. At least he was once his weight of skimmers passed Ken Sharpe's single carp of 6-9 caught just a few minutes into the match and his only fish.

 

Opposite Roger was Malcolm Jeffery who was also catching skimmers and v.small carp. Roger, on very light gear, landed a 3lb carp to make the difference over Malcolm's second place weight from peg 4. Pellet was the successful bait for both anglers

 

Unlucky that Ivan Coleman didn't find one more carp as his weight of small pasties to 3lb+ was 9-12 for 3rd on the day from peg 7 and he could so easily have passed Roger for a long over due win.

 

Only the odd fish were caught all around and even Cliff Myers couldn't catch more than 6-10 of silvers from peg 18. For me, it seemed sensible to keep trying for one big fish so I stuck with the 'heavy' gear which failed to work and had one 2lb carp plus some hybrids and silvers close in for just 5-7.

As a foot-note, 16yr  Matt Young fishes Frogmore every weekend and has a knack with locating the fish. But he bottled it today and opted not to fish the match. Perhaps wise given the poor results. Once the match was over he dropped in on peg 5 (which wasn't fished) and within 10 minutes was playing 'Kylie'. His 10 elastic gave him many close calls as Kylie ploughed through nearside weeds but eventually his luck (and line) held and she was in the net. Pole fished corn over 4mm pellet was the successful method.

 

A few minutes later he had a 3lb common in the net and seconds later lost another.
