Competitions Section

2004-05

I thought that this first newsletter of the new season would be a good time to talk about some of the things that we get up to on the competitions/match side of the club. Club match fishing has seen a big revival in recent years at the expense of the open match circuit, nowadays it is rare to find a match with more than about fifteen anglers unless you fish in one of the remaining leagues. At Verulam we have seen our attendances rise to over thirty during the summer and remain at around twenty-twenty five throughout the colder months.

Our matches are open to all club members and all pools are optional, I will explain the pools system later, and apart from a number of charity matches there are no entry fees.

All matches will be pegged down this year with the exception of the Ladies, juniors and over 60’s series. This means that there is no race for the favoured swims and local knowledge is no longer a prerequisite for success. The draw time for all matches is listed in the club card along with the fishing times. Occasionally it is necessary for venues to be changed at short notice usually as a result of bad weather, if you feel that there is any doubt please call one of the committee members who will advise you of any changes.

Pools

Any day ticket cost is the added to this.

The pools are paid out as follows;

Less than 15 anglers first & second only

16 ~ 30 anglers first, second and third

31+ pay out four places.

Those framing do not pick up section prizes.

The pools are paid out in the following ratios;

That means that with 23 anglers, for example, the total pool would divided into six and paid out 50%, 32% and 16% rounding as needed.

Sections are set prior to the commencement of the match dependant on numbers fishing.

The ‘Golden Peg’ is drawn prior to the main draw and if the angler drawing that peg wins the match then he collects whatever amount has accrued in the ‘pot’ since it was last won. Once the pot has reached £200 it is frozen and we move onto a ‘Silver Peg’ and then draw two pegs prior to the draw and so on. The ‘Golden Peg’ is not fished for if there are less than twelve anglers at the draw.

One of the drawbacks we encountered in recent seasons is that in a way we have become a victim of our own success, with some of our matches being in very high demand but their only being a limited number of pegs available. To deal with this for the forthcoming season we are introducing a booking scheme for all matches with limited pegs. No booking will be taken prior to the draw of the preceding match, we felt that this was the fairest way and it prevents someone pre-booking all the matches and then not turning up and hence denying a chance to another angler.

Bookings can also be made any time after that match by phone to Mark on 01582 612945 or Ash on 01442 216301.
