Commentary:
A glorious
day, weather wise, but the fishing was somewhat patchy with pegs 19 & 20
favoured as 1st & 2nd came from here the day before
when 87lb was top. And, as in previous years, disappointing that many
qualifiers did not choose to join us or even acknowledge the invitation.
True
enough, on this relatively featureless venue, the carp were still shoaled up
and fishing tight to the margins produced a steady stream of carp for both
Brian and Graham. Brian knew from a practise a few weeks earlier that simple
bread was all that was needed and landed fish from 1lb to 4lb. On the opposite
bank Graham stuck mostly to pellet to pick up some smaller fish weighing in over
16lb of these to boost his 34lb net of 2lb+ fish to a 50.09 winning total.
Elsewhere,
end peg no.1 gave current VAC Champ Stan a corner to fish into and his nine
carp came mostly to paste with a couple at the end on 6mm pellet. Stan lost a
number of foul hooked fish and wasted the first hour or so fishing maggot for
perch which proved to be absent, a decision that may have cost him the match.
Phil was
end peg at the top end and had a similar catch but included a 5.09 bream and
Andy K had one of 5-15.
Also
happy on the day was Ian Waugh who fished to a bushy sapling on his left margin
with worm for a real mixed bag that went over 26lb – one of his best VAC match
weights.
Easy to
moan but, to be fair, the weights were not too bad considering the match the
day before and the hot bright conditions. Doubtful if any of our home waters
would have provided a better return.
