VENUE:         Alders Farm

TROPHY:      Championship # 11

Commentary :

Alders is our most popular venue and all 34 places were sold out many weeks ago in great anticipation. We had seven on a waiting list so it's a shame we had one no-show. For most the fish also did a no-show as the weights do no reflect how hard the day was with bites being few and and far between as the carp would not settle.

For example, with only two hours left to go, Paul Bangs on peg 13 hadn't had a fish. So his 35.13 was a remarkable come-back. A few pegs to his right, Graham Holt on flyer peg 8 (with peg 7 empty), looked like an easy winner with a steady flow of fish during the early stages. A lost lump that took him into nearside snags killed his swim and it never really recovered.

Over on the twenties Ray  Cormack on 26 was having a hard day with numerous fish coming off. In fact, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, as two minutes silence was observed across the country, I bet they could hear Ray in Dunstable as he cursed yet another lost fish. To his right, Steve Burfoot clearly had some fish in front of him, plus the contents of a tackle bag as not only did he hook and land a catapult, he also landed a pair of sun glasses. Ray was in hysterics, especially when it was mentioned that they had seen a carp with a white stick.

Meanwhile, left of Ray on 27 was Neil Anderson who was carefully winkling out the odd fish at 14.5m on pellet. To his left, Dave McGrath was ignoring all the small baits/light lines advise and was fishing long with 0.20 line and a big 6-8mm expander to easily win with 65.04 of better than average sized carp. Neil ended on 53.05 and, just one fish behind, was Stan Kiddle on peg 23, facing into the strong wind on the dam end. Stan was picking up the odd fish. With 90 mins to go his swim switched on and a steady run of smaller carp saw him move up with the leaders only to be snookered by a lost tail-hooked lump 30 mins from the whistle. His successful rig was wreaked and he never had another bite. Unlike the others, Stan had all his fish on maggot at 11m, feeding four pints to motivate the fish and keep the tiddlers at bay.
