The Early Days of Carp Fishing

Another month, another new fishery

For some years it has been VAC policy to add one new fishery per season to our portfolio. So it's pretty amazing that this year we have established an agreement to provide, at no extra cost to members, access to Timberland Fisheries in Harlow plus free fishing on Jack's Lake near Cockfosters.

Further details can be found on our fisheries page or link directly by clicking the picture above. You can also visit the website of the controlling Hadley Angling and Preservation Society by clicking their logo at the bottom of this page.

Alone on the Long Walk

I would like to tell you about my recent visit to Marford. Found a good spot through the nettles and started at around mid day.For the first few hours nothing, then a big take from the opposite bank and was into a good fish, then all went slack and the line just snapped .
Is it possible I hooked a pike as there was nothing wrong with the line and it broke away very easily?

Anyway set up a new rig and noticed two large carp one larger than the other feeding by the near bank, I have been trying to get a river carp for two years now but have had no luck. I just dropped my rig into the faster flowing part of the river under my feet and let it run down just next to the bank about 5mts away. And waited patiently then a good take, was it the long awaited river carp? Certainly felt a good fish but instead a good chub which tipped the scales at 6lbs, the best chub I have ever had.

6lb - 51cm nose to tail

Baited up and dropped the line into the same spot. An even better take rod bend over double trying not to let the line get caught in the brambles, but dam it the line got twisted around a partly submerged tree. I was determined not to loose this fish as I was sure it was the long awaited river carp. Shoes and socks off time and go for a paddle with the fish still attached, but just as I was about to get my feet wet, the line came loose off the snag and away the fish went again. Not this time I thought and tried to put as much pressure as I could to turn the fish. In a few moments more it was in my landing net. Result....and what a fighter.

My first river carp & what a beauty, 14 lbs.

Shaking like made and stung to hell by the nettles I returned back to my swim and thought how nice it would be to round off the day with a good barbel. So again back it the same spot and after a short wait again a big take and hey the barbel of  6lbs I hoped for. What a great day and one to remember,  David Baumel

Barbel Day - Oct 11

Have you forgotten that the VAC Barbel day is on Saturday October 11th? As last year, it will be held on the Islands stretch of the Ouse at Felmersham. Similar agenda to last year (when 80 attended) with talks about bait and demonstrations of methods, all to help you catch more barbel. The VAC marquee will be up offering teas & coffees. Plans are for hot cauldrons of Irish stew rather than soggy BBQ food. Arrive early, leave late and enjoy the day.

October sees the start of the traditional pike season. And many VAC youngsters like to put their carp tackle to good use by swapping boilies for deadbaits on waters such as Moor Mill and Smallford. Last year many double figure pike were caught. Let us know how you get on.
