Half Way Round Up......

The endless Summer, which seemed to start back in May, has finally given way to Autumn and therefore this is a good time to take stock of what's been happening on Verulam waters. The traditional season is now half way so this round up will also be particularly interesting to the 430 new members who have joined in the last few months and may not yet be aware of what they've been missing out on.

Top of the pile just has to be Moor Mill. It's barely a year since we took over this neglected series of pits at Park Street, just South of St Albans. Possibly even those in the know have been surprised at the catches this year :- Toadless the Leather out at least three times to 41lb. Plus we've seen crucians to 4.08, a brace of tench to Paul Hill for almost 24lb, bags of bream averaging 10lb! roach to 3lb, numerous double figure carp ( growing like crazy in the Island Pit), plus an original stock common of 36lb. And how about 23 tench on the pole averaging 5lb for Stu Pooley !!

And let's not ignore the Frogmore match water just down the road. A new match record of 62lb, double figure carp caught almost daily to around 18lb plus quality bream to 5lb.

Over at Smallford the weekend long carp match was a great success and quality carp, as often as not over 20lb, have shown in good numbers. We now believe we have four 30lb plus fish along with double figure bream, tench to 12lb, roach over 2lb and a healthy head of pike. Top match weight this year was 58lb but bags of bream to 100lb have been reported.

.

My favourite water, Riverside, continues to improve. Although holding no mega specimens this water holds good stocks of many species and you never know what's coming next. It's not an overstocked easy water but there are plenty of single and double figure carp alongside bream, tench, roach and crucians. It's sheer beauty means this continues to be arguably our top water.

The rivers have also fished well with a 17lb barbel from Radwell, a 14lb from Felmersham and, closer to home, numerous barbel to 10lb and carp to 17lb from the Lea at Marford Farm.

Room to mention just one more; Troy Lake at Denham. Not for the faint hearted, this massive waters stocks are few in number but large in size. Chris knight, the editor of Verulam Carp, put in many hours to be rewarded with a single bream...of 18lb !!

Oscar Zehr went piking at Moor Mill and ended up with a quick change of tactics and this chunky 21lb common as a result. This fish, known as The Perch, has put on over 7lb in a year since being stocked from Frogmore

Ken Neville, new member this year, enjoyed a good catch at Leasey Bridge. In a 3hr evening session (after work) he landed two chub to 3lb a barbel of 4lb and this magnificent 11lb 12oz carp from the river, all on luncheon meat.

No, not a record gudgeon but evidence that our Marford barbel are spawning. Peter Barker reports that it was a delight to catch such a small barbel (about 4oz) on the Long Walk on 3rd Sept. It took a 17mm pellet on a No. 6 hair rig! A one-eyed mirror carp of 6lb also succumbed to his tactics. Have you ever caught a smaller barbel?
