Not just Barbel

For many members, our prolific stretches of the upper River Lea, provide them with the chance to catch our hardest fighting fish, the barbel. Both at Marford Farm in Wheathampstead and upstream at Leasey Bridge, we have double-figure fish to around 12lb. Not yet as big as their cousins downstream at Fisher's Green but still beauties.

But it's not just barbel that make these venues so popular. In addition to the prolific chub, some now approaching 6lb, some members have been fortunate with their efforts to target the smaller species with roach and perch over 3lb reported this year.
The fine example above weighed 3lb 5oz and was the best of a bunch landed by Paul Cox. Mind you, when you consider these fish get to feast on record gudgeon (some have been reported over 7" long) it's no wonder they are doing so well.

So next time you take a visit to one of our Lea venues, leave the meat and pellets behind and try lobworms, casters and maggots. Work your bait as naturally as possible down the swim and who knows, when the float goes under it might be a perch like above, a roach of a lifetime or even a 1lb dace. And this year the grayling stocked a couple of years back by the EA have been showing so don't be surprised if you wind one in.

* * Keep an eye out for cormorants * *
Please report any cormorants seen on the water when visiting Riverside, Frogmore and Bellows Mill in particular. Fishery managers contact details are in your membership book.

New memberships: Another great year of the VAC as membership numbers rush past the 2,100 number. If you're looking to join then you may wish to know that, as well as postal applications, you can sign-up at either Verulam Tackle Shop in St Albans or Colney Tackle in Hazeldine Rd, London Colney. For all the details please click the Subscriptions link above. Please be reminded that all able-bodied adult members are expected to undertake at least one work-party before the end of April and failure to do so attracts a work-party levy when renewing membership equal to the prevailing joining fee. This is to ensure that work-party obligations are not avoided by simply rejoining as a new member.

Your Contribution

A reminder that the Webmaster welcomes your contributions. Happy to receive your photos of  VAC venues, rainbows, kingfishers or unicorns. Doesn't have to be a fish

This perch, at 3-14, was landed by Paul Collins. Unfortunately the picture quality was not good enough to be the main photo.

Dan Field and Joe Colcough won this years Carp Match final at Smallford with fish like this to total 78lb.

At Moor Mill Aaron Brown had this common of 24lb plus others of 21lb and 18lb in a single session.

Not a record gudgeon but a baby barbel from Felmersham. Great to see new generations coming through.

Education around handling pike is part of the service when you sign up for one of Paul Charlton's pike matches. The next one will be promoted, as before, in e-News.

This Marford gudgeon may not look that big - put a ruler across your own knees and you will see it's about 8".
