Here Come The Girls...

No-one would deny that angling is a male oriented sport. So it's always an extra special event when a female member submits a picture of a special fish. And the tench below, held by Mandy Spooner, is special indeed. At 12lb 4oz it's the second largest tench caught by a female in the UK. Mandy actually caught it on a session at Smallford  back in early June and was a little disappointed (!!) as she was aiming for a large carp.

The VAC is also breaking records with membership at an all-time high of over 1,860. Of these at least 80 are of the fairer sex. One of these, Clare Waugh, has been fishing VAC waters with her parents since a very early age. She's our current 'Ladies' Champ' from our series of summer matches and has kindly penned the article below.

A Bird's Eye View

Iím a young lady member of the club and been fishing (visiting) the lakes before I was walking. I thought I would just share a few memories and make some people, well at least one person laugh. Before I carry on Iíll explain a little. I love my pole I used to have a blue pole Ďcos I believed fish would not see it when they look up but now with more water and bigger fish that I could accidentally catch so I had to move on to bigger tackle so the blue pole was then sold on but still have all the other blue tackle. I fish in junior, ladies and seniors matches and any social event Iím there with my ďLadies fish tooĒ top, Iím sorry guys I havenít only invaded the fishing banks and the forum, Iím now taking over the web site :)

Well best start at my first match which was a triangle match which was 3 clubs split in 3 teams of 3, fished at Shepherdsí Way. Some people may remember this match for the swimming pole, well that happened to be mine. The usual excuse, I was busy talking to one of the organisers when my pole was pulled out of my hands and was swimming round the lake. It was only a 5 metre telescopic pole so it would just stay afloat several people set up a rod with a bomb and in the end someone from other team got it back for me. I had lost the fish by then it had just pulled out but I could carry on to try again. At the end all participants got a goody bag of little items; a pack of hooks, my first ever disgorger and a few floats. Oh yes the important bit I did catch a few roach but they were nice fish .The bag that won was one of the oldest boys and it was 30lb bag of carp. I beat my elder brother, though.

Enjoying a match at Frogmore, 2004

Verulam go to Grafham

At the end of October a bunch of predator enthusiasts, lead by 'Cap'n' Keith Speer, took to the choppy waters of Grafham Reservoir in search of zander, pike and big perch.

Junior Pages

now updated

We are now in the traditional pike season. And many VAC youngsters like to put their carp tackle to good use by swapping boilies for deadbaits on waters such as Moor Mill and Smallford. Last year many double figure pike were caught. Let us know how you get on.
