This month...A Carp Free Zone

Like it or loathe it, carp are everywhere now and, generally speaking, most anglers are happy to catch carp.

However, this month let's celebrate the other species that members are catching from Verulam waters. And not just the regular still waters either as our river venues on the Lea and Ouse are throwing up numerous specimens.

Firstly, up on the Ouse both Radwell and Felmersham are producing double figure barbel including this 12lb'er to 12 year old Lewis Chippendale. It was his first trip to the Ouse and his first ever barbel with mini boilies doing the trick

Meanwhile, ever reliable Marford has continued its good form with numerous good fish coming out all along including this cracking 5lb chub on feeder fished maggot. This venue gets a lot of attention and it's likely that most fish are caught on a regular basis. Yet this is the first 5lb'er I've seen and, if you've caught bigger, don't be shy, send us a picture.

Back up at Felmersham, a recent VAC match produce numerous small fish to the dozen or so members that opted to give it a go. Whilst the overall weights were modest it was good to see plenty of roach, dace, chublets, bleak and even minnows for a change with better roach taking hemp, tares and even ol' fashioned stewed wheat.

On our still waters, Riverside continues to fish well for all species and has been boasted by the stocking of several hundred small chub (to hopefully munch on the crays) O Our new venue at Moor Mill pits continues to reward those making the effort with pike to almost 30lb, crucians to 4lb plus big perch, tench and bream coming out.

Even Leasey Bridge has been getting in on the act. Whilst the river can be a challenge at times, get there when there's a touch of warm rain water running in and the light is fading and you can be rewarded with some cracking herring-like dace, nice sized wild chub and the occasional (and most beautiful) river roach.
