Kylie - Especially For You

Despite the recent Spring Warm-Up match at Frogmore not being well attended, 16 year-old Matt Young played safe and fished on Tony's Lake until the match was over. Matt is a regular at Frogmore, often fishing both Saturday's and Sunday's on his favourite Peg 4.

The match result itself was close with low weights topped by just 14lb of skimmers to Roger Smith. This is often the case as the bigger fish somehow know a match is on. After helping with the weigh-in Matt set up on peg 5 (peg 4 was occupied) and within minutes of lowering his pole-fished corn hook bait to the island reeds he was attached to something very big and heavy.

Matt's elastic took the strain and after a long and steady battle he finally had 'Kylie' in the net and recorded as 8lb 13oz.

Matt went on to hook and land several more carp over the next hour easily beating the winning match weight.

Regular VAC readers will recall that your wonderful (and modest) Webmaster landed this beautiful Koi back in February when he won a match with just three carp for 28lb after breaking the ice. This fish was a bit of a surprise as we thought we had only one big Koi, namely Keith, in Frogmore - caught regularly at around 9lb 8oz until he (or she) died late in 2007. It seemed only right that the 'new' Koi should have a name and Kylie it was (something about I should be so lucky). By the way, Frogmore received some additional stocks recently and plenty of bites and quality fish should now be the order of the day (except perhaps in matches)

Aylesbury Arm - Lower Dixon's Gap - Wilstone  This Tring AA controlled stretch is a branch off the GUC with moderate boat traffic. A short pound, it’s full of far bank features and has centre track depths to 4ft. prolific for carp to 30lb, and good chub to 5lb 6oz. Other species include tench to 7lb, bream to 5lb, perch to 3lb and roach to 1lb 4oz. See last month (via the Archive link) for more detail.

Young Hannah Parker showed the boys how to catch on a difficult weekend at Moor Mill. The 6-08 bream was the only fish landed amongst a dozen or so rods. Spicy Shrimp and Prawn Boilie the magic bait.

Now here's a proper carp. Tom Carey had this 36-08 sparsely scaled mirror (aka Cut-Tail) plus four 20's from a 'VAC water' south of Bedford.

Our man in Spain, Maurice Matthews, reports from the Costa Del Sol that the small carp are feeding well on sweetcorn. Plenty of small carp on the many reservoir venues.

Almost all carp this month. Here's Terry Field with the biggest fish reported in 2008 so far from Smallford. 27.08 on the scales, about time a 30 came out.
