HERO MEMBERS WIN HUMANE SOCIETY AWARD

TWO CLUB members have been awarded a Humane Society citation after rescuing another member who fell into the water after suffering with a suspected heart attack at our water at Frogmore.

Simon McNamara, despite being poor swimmer, tied a rope around his waist and went into the lake to search for the member who had already disappeared below the surface. His brother Glen then joined him in the water followed by David Farrant who lives in the house nearby.

After some searching, they found and dragged the lifeless body from the lake. With instructions relayed from Ambulance Control by mobile phone, another member Bob Viner administered cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and, after several minutes, the member began to breathe again and was taken to hospital. In addition to the award, the trio won the personal praise of Major General Christopher Tyler, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, he said: "All three men swam at least ten metres in very muddy water as deep as three metres. They could have easily got into difficulties themselves, yet they selflessly searched for their fellow angler". "Without their actions, this man would surely have died. They richly deserve these awards".

No date has as yet to be set for the presentation and the member concerned has since fully recovered.

Note: This information was obtained via a Press Release sent to the local  newspaper. The VAC acknowledges that other members were also involved in this rescue and saving of a life.

The club's Guest Book is now seeing greater use. Please remember this for for providing general feedback and comment on the website and our waters. It is not for relaying matters of an urgent or serious matter - these should be directed to the secretary or head of fisheries - see Contacts for details. Also, the General Committee feel that leaving messages on the Guest Book anonymously is neither of value nor constructive to the club and such entries will be deleted. Members are reminded that they can raise any issue directly with the committee via the Secretary or at the AGM.

Riverside Club House - Official Opening

It's been a few months now since VAC President Dennis Bateman officially opened the club house at Riverside Road. So my apologies for not publishing this sooner and also for the quality of the picture which is a scan of a print of a scan !!

Match News: Results have continued to be poor during January with an 8lb weight of skimmers at Cowroast on the GUC let down by poor backup weights and numerous dry nets. Weather conditions have meant that matches scheduled for club river venues continue to be diverted to semi-frozen still waters. Click here for details of recent VAC Championship Rounds.

Half Price Membership

Prospective new members can still join the VAC at half price. That means adults can join for just 27.50 + 25 annual subscription providing full access to our waters until next June (subject to applicable close season restrictions).

For further information simply go to our Subscription Page by clicking here.

River Flit

As mentioned last month, the EA have now performed an initial survey of our stretch of the Flit and results were very disappointing with few fish found. Members are advised to give the venue a miss for the time being, meanwhile the Fisheries Committee will continue a dialogue with the EA to identify and agree actions.

Each month, Queensway Angling are offering special offers exclusively to VAC members.

An early dog walk around Riverside in mid January provided plenty of opportunity to capture the winter beauty of ice, frost and sunrise.

But I didn't expect to find anyone fishing...and I didn't hang around to see if this dedicated carp angler even got a bite!
