It's at this time of year our fisheries come under attack.
Whilst crayfish can be a nuisance, the American Mink, alien to
this country, are now widespread in the Ver and Colne valleys
and are known to cause significant damage to our fish stocks.
Carp, lethargic in cold weather, are particularly at risk.
Having to remove half eaten carcasses of quality carp is one of
the less attractive tasks our fishery bailiffs have to undertake
However, of the two I would say it's the Cormorant which is the
most efficient predator. Hunting usually in small packs, they
descend upon deserted fisheries, herding shoals of roach, bream
and crucians into small bays where they can systematically take
their fill day after day, with the survivors typically too
scared to escape to safer waters.
With the fishing at Riverside and Frogmore somewhat patchy at
this time of year they can be deserted for several days at a
time, particularly mid week. Whilst low hanging ropes can help
to deter the cormorants, mink seem increasingly tolerant of
anglers. We must therefore all work together to minimise these
threats. Members who live close by to any of our still waters
are asked to find time to pop along, perhaps on the way to work,
just to keep an eye out and report back to the club any
sightings. Even if you only can do one or two days a month this
would probably mean that most mornings someone was there to
If you do see any cormorants or mink on our waters please let
the fisheries team know by email -

Match Dan Patrick News:
That man Dan does it again.
Following some confusion over dates the VAC
match regulars finally got to do battle with
the carp at Rolfs Lake near Oxford
Last time we were there Dan went swimming to
recover his pole. This time his luck was in,
drawing peg 24, one of the best Winter pegs,
and fished corn at 16m over minimal loose
feed to bag 119-08. Top carp on the day went
to Kev Wilder at 15-08 (it broke his landing
net handle) and numerous double fish fish
were landed at this pole only match venue.
At least two members had power top-twos
broken - and this in in the Winter when the
carp don't fight !
All the results are here
The long walk at Marford is throwing up some
nice fish for those prepared to make the
effort and are able to keep low and quite.
For example, young Peter
Kraushaar (9) recently had two nice chub to
3lb (below) whilst his dad Jon winkled out
this small barbel.
