A Merry Christmas and a fishy New
Year to all our members
It's Wonderful
this Winter
Traditionalists will be
delighted that the long awaited winter rains have now 'switched on' our river
venues. True, of course, that the Marford short-walk fishes well all season but
our more 'natural' venues such as Leasey Bridge and the Marford Long-walk plus
our Ouse and Ivel stretches come into their own at this time of year.
Walk into a tackle shop these
days and you might think that the only fish out there is carp such is the demand
for tackle and bait. So, to restore balance, this month we salute those who
embrace the traditional methods such as free-lining, stretpegging and touch
ledgering. Members such as Den (the Wanderer) Poole who is happiest covering
miles of deserted river bank looking for big perch such as this beauty below.

Den has enjoyed much success
recently now that the weeds are dying back with numerous fish per session
feeding red maggot with prawns or lobs on the hook but reports, typically, he
that his biggest perch slipped the hook - doh!
Perhaps only a matter of time before
a VAC member reports a 4 or even 5lb perch. But the beauty of the fish (just
look at that mini-plug caught example on the right) makes size immaterial.
And it's not just perch. Other
species such as barbel to 14lb and chub to nearly 7lb have been reported so,
with only a few months left before the rivers close in mid March, get out there
and rediscover those magical river moments.
VAC Membership now past 1,900 - next stop 2,000 !!

The VAC Match Section
has proved to be very popular this session with many matches fully
subscribed. Almost 80 members have fished at least one VAC match this
season.
Top weight in a match this
season has been almost 160lb...but fair to say that just a fraction of
that weight would be a good result on this months Christmas Match at
Riverside. Due to the exceptional high demand we have squeezed in 42
places so it definitely will be cosy.
It is, of course, fully
booked. If you are not on the list sorry. Let's just hope that the
weather stays kind and we're not breaking the ice. For all the match
results and 'next match' previews check out the match pages by

Are you in 'Constant
Contact'?
The club has now issued
three 'new-style' E-News updates using a commercial solution called
Constant Contact and utilising the email addresses recorded by
members on our new Club database.
With
over 1,800 members it remains a frustration that only 578 have recorded
their email addresses. And we know from Constant Contact that
around 10% of these are not valid
Please make the effort to
ensure that your email address is correctly registered. If you have not
seen the last three issues of the new E-News then it's likely we do not
have your correct address. Please do not confuse the
fact that your email may be registered on the
VAC Forum -
these are totally independent systems. |

Carys Stout proved herself as the
Marford Barbel Queen with this 9.08 personal best.

Beards Reunited: Keith Speer poses
this 10.12 barbel, believed to be the biggest in Marford.

Lure fan Dave Canning often catches
perch like this 1lb 15oz beauty from Leasey Bridge

Keith again with one of several 6lb
plus chub he's reported recently from one of our river venues. This one went 6lb
5oz.
