Open Day 2007

IN PERFECT summer weather, the Verulam Angling Clubís Open Day in aid of National Fishing Week was, once again, a huge success.

Young and old found their way to the clubís fishery in Riverside Road, St Albans, Saturday 4th August and enjoyed finding out about the club and its facilities with many youngsters having a first try at fishing.

Club officer Keith Speer, welcomed the Mayor of St Albans Cllr Kate Morris, who spent quite some time with club secretary John Trew and fishery manager Barry Killinger, strolling around the delightful setting taking a keen interest in what was going on.

There were many different aspects of coarse angling for the visitors to try out along with fly casting sessions, fly tying and demonstrations on how to smoke the trout once caught. Click here for more pictures from the trout section.

Stands included the neighbouring Watercress Wildlife Association, Dave Arisí antique tackle, Environmental Agency and various tackle dealers and fishery management personnel.

For the very young (and Ash Adams) there was face painting, play area and bouncy castle.

Ably-manned by club membersí wives and children, the barbecue was a great success and refreshments were on hand from the 10 am start until the close at 8.30 pm.

Club lands new fishery

ACQUIRING a new fishery every year has now become something of a tradition for the VAC and we are pleased to continue this by announcing a further stretch of the river Great Ouse. Situated just north of Felmersham village, this attractive stretch of river provides around 30 pegs and will no doubt prove popular both with our competitions section as well as the pleasure angler. Around 1,000 yards in length, the fishery is on a long sweeping bend of the river, lined with plantation willows with a mature tree-lined bank opposite and is only 100 yards from the car park. There are slow, wider lengths as well as faster runs and a good opportunity to fish under the over- hanging trees and bushes on the far bank. The car park is opposite the entrance and with careful parking, you could get several vehicles in with more on match days when all depart at the same time. Entry is by a public footpath sign, following along side this path down to the river. Currently the grass in the meadow is quite high and thus it's a bit of a tussle to walk through though that will improve when the grass it cut. The banks are quite high in nettles at present so I suggest members take something to clear themselves a swim. Let us know how you get on.
