Bellows Magic

It's little more than two years since the VAC completed on the contract to purchase the freehold for two lakes and a stretch of the river Ouzel at Bellows Mill, near Eaton Bray and Whipsnade Zoo in south Bedfordshire, about 20 miles from St Albans.

In that time we've completely re-landscaped the lakes including adding many inches of extra depth and, on the Mill Lake, three islands. Ford Lake, by the entrance and car park, has been optimised for trout fishing with just seven well spaced platforms (see right) and VAC trout members can now target brown as well as rainbow trout.

With all the coarse fish now in Mill Lake, supplemented by generous stocking of big roach, crucians and tench, this 'investment' is already paying dividends with plenty of double-figure roach weights and big perch to 3lb.

Of course, work is far from over with plans for a toilet block, additional planting of reeds and lily's and regeneration of the river. For more information please check out the fishery info recently compiled by hard-working fishery manager Andy Karczmarek.

Dates for your diary

The 26th AGM will be held on April 18th, as usual, at New Greens Hall, High Oaks, St Albans. Our popular Open Day at Riverside is currently planned for Saturday July 14th.

Match News: Spring 'warm-up' matches are scheduled for April 8th (Frogmore) & 29th (Smallford) plus 13th May at Riverside. Later in the year, perhaps August, we are looking at the possibility of running a fishing race with points per species per venue.

The full 2012-13 fixture list is still being completed. With so many attending, (an average of 25 per match last year) we are having to look for some larger venues. Full details on the VAC Match pages during April.

VAC membership for the current season has now been closed. New memberships, for season 2012-13 will become available early in May and will be valid from June 16.

A limited number of Early Start tickets (15 surcharge applies) will be available by collection only from Verulam Angling Centre.

Keep a look out for VAC e-news in your in-box as a number of work parties are now being planned. Remember that, unless you are exempt, you need to complete a work party before 1st May or pay the penalty when renewing your membership for next season. As well as more physically demanding work we have a need for a number of people to help with new season paperwork and coaching days - contact the VAC Secretary if this appeals.
