Fishers Green,

(yet) another water for the VAC

The Old River Lea... as a teenager in the 70's I used to look over in awe at the stretch of the original course of Lea as I walked up the navigation towpath from Cheshunt to the LAA stretch at Aquaduct Lock. In those days the mysterious Waverly AS had control. Whilst I was catching 2lb chub and 3lb barbel my imagination was filled with the monsters that lived downstream. Time moved on and the venue came under Leisure Sport. Eventually, in the late 80's and 90's, with my precious limited edition ticket, I enjoyed many trips there.

Jump forward a decade and much had changed. The Lea Valley Park, as a governing authority had been created and controlling bodies had changed until, up to last year, the water was controlled by Cemex Angling. Also, many will already know of a number of well documented problems, sadly including a fish kill, and the abundant stocks of small chub and barbel that I once fished for are no longer present. A bite these days may come only after many hours, even days but the chances are it will be from a 7lb+ chub or a 14lb+ barbel. Big carp and bream are also present and the neighbouring pits are home to massive pike, tench and other specimens.

Early in 2010 it was announced that the lease for the river and pits would be up for tender and, from this season, that lease has been acquired by a newly formed Fishers Green Consortium comprised of 11 local clubs. By far the largest of these is the VAC and, with our existing consortium membership at Turnford, we see that adding Fishers Green to our portfolio is a great development from our club. It also shows that, yet again, we are fulfilling our ambitions and providing our membership with AT LEAST one new water per year.

As stated, the management of Fishers Green will be via the new Consortium and between now and the start of the river season on June 16, all details will be made available on the VAC website and the Consortium's own site. If you are looking to join the VAC and gain access to Fishers Green, we open our books to new members during May.

'Complete Tangler' - The Ian Waugh Memorial Match

On the last weekend of March, in memory of member Ian Waugh (pictured left), who was an avid campaigner for encouraging juniors into angling, a match was held at Moor Mill. Fished over two days and with any fish over 3lb to count, expectations were of plenty of bream and carp.

As sometimes happens, the fish didn't read the script and only an 8lb carp and a 5lb bream were landed. Not that it mattered as everyone present had a great time with a well supported raffle and BBQ swelling the cash collected to just over 270, all of which will go to supporting junior angling within the VAC.

Well done to Dave 'Duch' Hiller and all those that supported him with the organising and activities.

Your Contribution

Don't be shy, send your catch pics to the webmaster...

Andrew Giddings has been a regular at Fishers Green and kindly volunteered this snap of a 6lb 6oz chub

The clear waters of Fishers Green also hold some spotty fish such as this sample caught in 2009.

Barry Shipman kindly donated lots of FG pics including this one of dawn on Langridge Lake.

Joe Colclough spent Easter at Smallford and landed this 17.5lb mirror carp on a cell boilie tipped with fake corn, with some aniseed particle mix over the top.

Can't not mention that the VAC's biggest fish, Toadless, was banked in early April at a healthy 40.03. Well done to Matt Townend
