Yes, sixteen fifty is not ten to five, it's not the cost of my new pole, it's not Ol' George's date of birth. In fact, 1,650 is the total number of VAC members.

New member Tom Hollinshed came down from Milton Keynes to do some stick float fishing at Marford before the season ended and bagged this fat 5lb' chub on white maggot.

Nothing wrong I say in all giving ourselves a virtual pat on the back but more important, I think, to explore why our membership is growing, to recognise the work that has gone into achieving and maintaining membership growth, and what this all means for the future.

Principally it's about giving people what they want. That means your General Committee and its supporting committees listen carefully to members requests, stick closely to the rule book, engage professional help where appropriate and make no quick or knee-jerk decisions.

As a result, and with the income from membership, the VAC has, over the last year or so alone, achieved the following:

• Turned Moor Mill into a 1st class fishery

• Improved access and swims at Smallford

• Rebuilt the car park lake at Frogmore and kept the match lake open during the '06 drought

• Introduced 400 plus people to angling via the Riverside Open Day

• Acquired additional fishing at Felmersham

In fact, this list could go on and on. What it amply proves is that, unlike some clubs, the VAC doesn't sit on it's hands.

Membership

If you are interested in becoming a member, download the "Application Form". Once completed, return it to the address on the form. You will be notified around the end of April/early May that membership is available along with details of the subscriptions. You can then decide if you wish to take up membership.
