Riverside Regenerated

For a few weeks at the start of the year, when everywhere else was frozen, our Riverside Road fishery, in central St Albans, was raided. Despite the efforts of the fishery team and members, swarms of up to a dozen cormorants where visiting the water when it was absent of anglers, to feast on the abundant silver fish stocks.

The fisheries team soon had the problem under control and as other waters thawed, the birds moved away. But a full survey found that we had lost a good number of small fish so emergency funds were released to install dedicated fish sanctuaries and new stocks ordered. In addition, CCTV cameras. accessible remotely by the fishery team have been installed. All this was achieved during the Riverside trout season and with great support from the VCA trout section.

With resumption of coarse fishing on May 6th, the Bank Holiday Monday, it was great to see the water attended by numerous members. Sport was reported as excellent with numerous catches of carp & good sized bream reported along with bags of smaller stock carp and quality silver fish. The latter is particularly important as Riverside is our primary venue for an extensive coaching programme this Summer by our qualified coaches and aimed, primarily, at introducing juniors to the sport.

Currently the water is divided by a net to keep the new stock closer to the clubhouse end where it's easier to monitor how well they are settling in. The far end, however, still has numerous carp, averaging 5lb and to double figures, plus other species, to target as Steve Burfoot proved on the opening day.

* VAC Coaching Sessions *

Roger Smith is the VAC''s Level 2 angling coach and this year, supported by our level 1 coaches, Last season Roger has delivered angling tuition to well over 100 budding fishermen of both sexes. Sessions for this season, mostly at Riverside Road, will soon be underway. Check out the Junior Section for details or by emailing Roger here. Although aimed mostly at Juniors the VAC does also run a number of sessions for adults as well covering basic tactics as well as specialist techniques. Roger is also running ten junior matches with the first at Riverside on Saturday June 22nd and then with regular Saturday dates through until October.

 

Version 2 of our Membership Database now live

With the release from 1st November of our half-year option for new members the VAC have also successfully migrated to version 2 of or our club membership database. Based on the ClubPier platform, the membership database product is available for purchase and suits similar clubs and associations.

One particular major development is that we can now accept payment via Paypal (for new memberships only). Once onboard with the VAC we do encourage you to sign-up for Direct Debit as this allows us to ensure that your new season's membership is facilitated promptly without the costs and overheads of posting renewal forms, reminders and processing cheques.
