The Show Must Go On
VAC vice-chairman Keith Speer,
a regular on the VAC homepage with his many great catches, plus star
of Tight Lines on Sky and the Angling Times*, died suddenly whilst
returning to his car after a day on one of his favourite venues, the
River Lea at Marford Farm. The cause of death, on 23rd February, was
massive cardiac arrest. Keith was just 60 years old.
A sign of the love and affection for Keith, not only from his family
but by his friends in the world of angling, was evident when around
400 people attended his cremation at Garston Crematorium on March
As agreed with his family, anglers were encouraged to attend in
their fishing gear and, for the ceremony itself, it was standing
room only. When his daughter Lucy spoke of her memories of her
father there wasn't a dry eye to be seen.
The loss of Keith will have a big impact; he was the driving force
behind many VAC events and a passionate campaigner. But one man
doesn't make a club and it's perhaps fitting that the last song to
be played, as the mourners paid their respects, was Queen's 'The
Show Must Go On'.
